What Is Seven Days Ashore About? (No Spoilers)

The plot of Seven Days Ashore (1944) without spoilers: what it is about, who it follows and where it takes place, told without the twists or the ending. Enough to decide whether it is your next watch, not enough to ruin it.

San Francisco serves as a vibrant backdrop for a lighthearted tale of romantic entanglements and shore leave escapades. Dan Arland, a carefree playboy serving in the Merchant Marine, returns to dry land anticipating a week of relaxation. However, his reputation as a charming ladies' man precedes him, and the city’s bustling social scene quickly becomes a minefield of past liaisons. The atmosphere is charged with the anticipation of a sailor on leave, but Dan’s homecoming is complicated by the realization that his romantic life is far more precarious than he remembered.

The core of Dan’s dilemma lies in a tangle of affections he can no longer juggle. Two violinists from an all-female band, Carol Dean and Lucy Banning, are under the impression that they are his sole romantic interests. Complicating matters further is Annabelle Rogers, the woman Dan actually considers his true partner, who arrives with her own questions about his loyalty. With only seven days to resolve these overlapping relationships, Dan finds himself in a high-stakes social balancing act where a single slip could spell disaster for his romantic future.

Desperate to untangle the web he has woven, Dan recruits two of his shipmates, Monty Stephens and Orval 'Handsome' Martin, to intervene. His plan involves enlisting them to distract his "surplus" girlfriends, hoping to buy enough time to smooth things over with Annabelle. As the sailors attempt to pose as suitors, the stage is set for a chaotic comedy of errors where schemes are destined to collide, and the women involved prove to be far more intuitive than Dan anticipated.
