What Happens in Settai: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Settai (2013) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

In a cramped Mumbai apartment, journalist Jayakanthan, Arya known as JK Boss, photographer Nagaraj, [Santhanam], and Cheenu, [Premji Amaran], share a cluttered, debt-ridden life. Their routine is turned upside down when J.K.’s air-hostess fiancée, Madhumita, Hansika Motwani, agrees to deliver a package for a dangerous crime boss named Guna, without understanding what she is carrying. To keep things simple, J.K. asks Nagaraj to handle the delivery, but a sudden bout of diarrhea after tasting Ileana Chicken from a roadside eatery prevents him from going himself. With Nagaraj indisposed, he passes Madhumita’s package to Cheenu, along with another package that contains his own stool sample destined for his doctor. A fateful mix-up occurs when Cheenu swaps the two bags—an error that immediately catches Guna’s attention and triggers a furious interrogation by the crime lord, as Richard, Ashwin Mushran, reports that Madhumita may be the culprit behind the confusion.

As tensions simmer, Nagaraj quietly documents his landlord’s life with a prostitute and sends an envelope of photos as blackmail, adding another thread to their already tangled situation. Meanwhile, J.K. and Madhumita become entangled in a separate moment of danger when his colleague Shakthi, Anjali, calls him under the guise of work. They end up at a party instead, where jealousy erupts in the presence of Rajeev, Shakthi’s ex-husband, who shoots at them in a fit of rage before the couple barely escapes. The chase underscores how quickly loyalty can fracture when money and danger collide.

Richard informs Guna that the package mix-up likely stemmed from Madhumita’s ignorance about what she carried, and the tension escalates when J.K. returns to his apartment to find Guna looming over Cheenu, who is strapped to a stool with a noose around her neck. Under severe pressure, Guna uncovers the truth: the real package—the one containing something valuable—must be with Nagaraj’s doctor. The suspense reaches a turning point when Nagaraj retrieves the package from the doctor’s office, revealing thirty diamonds hidden inside. With the diamonds reclaimed, Guna orders his henchmen to eliminate the three roommates.

A desperate moment follows as one of the would-be shooters targets J.K., but Cheenu’s quick thinking saves them when a teammate kicks the stool away just as danger closes in. The apartment ceiling caves in under the strain, injuring Guna and his men and giving the trio a chance to escape with the diamonds. They hole up for the night at Shakthi’s place and, with the morning light, sell the sparkling loot to a local jeweler, hoping the danger has passed.

Yet danger has not finished with them. Guna has Madhumita abducted and demands the diamonds back, pushing the trio toward a high-stakes plan to recover the money. When the jeweler tries to push a double payment, the trio—Honda-be-damned and resourceful—devises a bold caper. Nagaraj, Cheenu, J.K., and Shakthi disguise themselves as burglars, gag the shopkeeper, seize the diamonds, and reclaim the money. They race away in J.K.’s car with police snapping at their heels, taking the confrontation to a hotel where Madhumita is being held for the exchange.

A tense gunbattle erupts as Guna’s gang clashes with the police, leaving a narrow path to survival for the central trio and their allies. When the dust settles, Nagaraj, Cheenu, J.K., Madhumita, and Richard emerge as the surviving players, while Shakthi—aware of J.K.’s engagement—walks away from him. A final twist reveals that Nagaraj did not return the cash to the jewelry storeowner and had kept it for himself, signaling a questionable victory. The film ends with Shakthi returning J.K.’s car hubcap—lost during their getaway from Rajeev—and J.K. leaping into her car, sealing their escape with a kiss that hints at a complicated future.

Settai Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Settai (2013): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why did Cheenu swap the two packages?

Cheenu swapped the packages because Nagaraj gave him both Madhumita's package meant for Guna and his own stool sample meant for the doctor at the same time. Cheenu, not knowing which was which, accidentally grabbed the wrong bag and delivered the stool sample to Guna while keeping the valuable package. This mix-up immediately drew Guna's suspicion and wrath.

Foreshadowing: Earlier, Nagaraj's sudden diarrhea from eating Ileana Chicken prevented him from making the delivery himself, forcing him to pass both packages to Cheenu.

Q2

How did the diamonds end up in Nagaraj's doctor's office?

The diamonds were hidden inside the package that was supposed to contain Nagaraj's stool sample. When Cheenu swapped the bags, the package with diamonds (originally meant for Guna) got mixed with Nagaraj's medical sample. Since Nagaraj couldn't deliver either package due to his illness, he gave both to Cheenu, and the diamond package remained with him until he could retrieve it from his doctor's office later.

Q3

Why did Guna target the three roommates?

Guna believed the roommates were responsible for the package mix-up that resulted in his diamonds being lost. When Richard reported that Madhumita may have been the culprit, Guna traced the delivery chain back to the apartment. He captured Cheenu to interrogate them and demanded the diamonds back, eventually ordering their elimination once he learned the diamonds were with Nagaraj's doctor.

Q4

How did the roommates escape from Guna's attack?

The escape happened when one of Guna's henchmen kicked the stool Cheenu was strapped to, causing the already unstable apartment ceiling to collapse under the weight. The collapse injured Guna and his men, creating chaos that allowed J.K., Nagaraj, and Cheenu to grab the diamonds and flee. They took shelter at Shakthi's place for the night.

Foreshadowing: The apartment was described as shabby and cluttered, with structural weakness being part of its characterization.

Q5

Why does Shakthi leave J.K. at the end despite helping him?

Shakthi was upset because J.K. was already engaged to Madhumita. Even though she helped the trio during the crisis, she couldn't accept being the other woman. She walked away from J.K. after the confrontation ended, showing that their relationship had no future given his existing commitment.

Q6

What happened to the extra cash from the jewelry sale?

Nagaraj kept the extra cash for himself instead of returning it to the jewelry storeowner. When they sold the diamonds and the jeweler tried to cheat them with double payment, the roommates robbed him. Afterward, Nagaraj secretly kept the additional money, making their victory morally questionable.

Q7

Why is Richard still alive at the end of the movie?

Richard, who was Guna's associate and reported on Madhumita, survived because he was not killed during the final gunbattle. After Guna's gang clashed with police, Richard emerged alongside the main characters. He likely survived because he was not a primary target and the police intervention prevented further casualties among the survivors.

Q8

What does the hubcap scene at the end mean?

The hubcap is from J.K.'s car, which was lost during their getaway from Rajeev's shooting earlier. Shakthi returning it symbolizes her forgiveness and willingness to give their relationship another chance. J.K. then leaps into her car and they kiss, indicating they will pursue a future together despite his previous engagement.

Foreshadowing: The hubcap was lost during the chase when Rajeev fired at J.K. and Madhumita.

Q9

Why did Guna kidnap Madhumita?

Guna kidnapped Madhumita to force the trio to return the diamonds. Since they had already sold the diamonds to a jeweler, Guna used her as leverage to compel them to recover his loot and pay the ransom. This forced J.K., Nagaraj, and Cheenu to plan the bold jewelry store robbery to get both the diamonds and money back.

Q10

What was the Ileana Chicken and why did it matter?

Ileana Chicken is a dish from a roadside eatery that Nagaraj ate, causing him to develop severe diarrhea. This illness prevented him from delivering the package to Guna, which set off the entire chain of events. The comedic subplot ties directly to the main crime narrative.
