Ayya Aadhimoolam, Vijay Sethupathi, is a veteran theatre actor who refuses to act in films because he wants to perform in front of a live audience. In recent years, his plays have drawn only a meager crowd, a reality that weighs on him. During Sujatha’s Oonjal, Ayya dies. After his death, Ayya’s assistant Parasuraman Mouli and his troupe decide to keep the shows going with alarming regularity.

During Panjali Sabadham’s rehearsals, Parasuraman notices that two actors are delivering performances far stronger than before. Among them is Saravanan, Rajkumar, a rising talent who captivates the audience by bowing to them even when the curtains remain closed. Parasuraman affirms that Ayya’s spirit is still active on stage, guiding Saravanan in moments of triumph and vulnerability.

Saravanan’s extraordinary presence soon catches the eye of Thyagu, a film director on the hunt for a male lead for his next project. Persuaded by Parasuraman that Ayya is guiding Saravanan, Thyagu signs him for the role, hopeful that the ghostly energy will give the film a unique edge. As Ayya works through Saravanan, the movie becomes a hit, and Saravanan rises as a sought-after star. It becomes clear that Ayya acted in the films because he genuinely enjoyed the story.

The momentum continues when Saravanan signs another project without Parasuraman’s knowledge, while Parasuraman still curates scripts for him. On the set of director Sundar’s shoot, Ayya’s spirit unexpectedly withdraws from acting, and the public is left to learn that Ayya had indeed contributed to those films where Saravanan led.

Producers begin to approach Ayya directly, and Parasuraman continues to select projects based on their scripts’ substance. Ayya becomes a major Tamil cinema icon. A producer named Dhanapal wants Ayya to star in his film but does not reveal that the project will include heavy action and song sequences.

When Parasuraman uncovers the deception, he is horrified. The situation escalates as Dhanapal pressures Ayya’s family to push the project forward, while the Producers’ Council contends that Ayya never acted at all. A court case follows, and Ayya’s family presents footage from Dhanapal’s film as evidence. Dhanapal counters that they stole his film, but the court treats the footage as an exhibit in the proceedings.

The judge, J. Mahendran, observes Dhanapal’s acting and asks him to perform in the film, but Dhanapal refuses, implying that Ayya was the true performer. The judge then delivers a defining statement: a man cannot be separated from his art. Ayya, though not present in the flesh, remains a living force behind the art, and the courtroom judgment resonates beyond the courtroom walls.

In the final scenes, a statue of Ayya is unveiled in front of his theatre, honoring the lifelong bond between artist and craft. Elsewhere, a school play ends with the lead actor bowing for an unusually long time, a quiet, enduring tribute to Ayya’s enduring spirit and the idea that art outlives the artist.

Q1

How does Ayya's spirit act through Saravanan?

A.

During Panjali Sabadham rehearsals, Parasuraman notices Saravanan delivering performances far stronger than before. Saravanan bows to the audience even when the curtains remain closed, which Parasuraman interprets as Ayya's spirit guiding him. It is later revealed that Ayya acted in films because he genuinely liked the story, making it a conscious artistic choice rather than mere possession.

Parasuraman had earlier affirmed that Ayya's spirit remains active on stage, which prepares for the discovery of Saravanan's enhanced performances.

Q2

Why does Ayya refuse to act in films at first?

A.

Ayya is a veteran theatre actor who refuses to act in films because he wants to perform in front of a live audience. Theatre provides the immediate feedback and connection with spectators that cinema cannot replicate, which is why he values it over the commercial appeal of films.

His decision to refuse films establishes his deep commitment to live theatre, making his eventual 'posthumous' film career a significant character arc.

Q3

What deception does producer Dhanapal commit?

A.

Producer Dhanapal wants Ayya to star in his film but hides that the project will include heavy action sequences and song numbers. When Parasuraman uncovers this deception, he realizes Dhanapal has exploited Ayya's name for commercial gain without respecting the artistic integrity Ayya's spirit brought to the project.

Earlier, producers approach Ayya directly and Parasuraman continues selecting scripts based on substance, setting up the contrast with Dhanapal's exploitation.

Q4

Why does Ayya's spirit stop acting during Sundar's film?

A.

During director Sundar's shoot, Ayya's spirit unexpectedly withdraws from acting on cue. This moment reveals that Ayya's involvement was tied to specific circumstances, when Saravanan signed a film without Parasuraman's knowledge and the creative conditions changed, Ayya chose to stop. It becomes clear Ayya had contributed only to those films curated by Parasuraman.

Saravanan signing a project without Parasuraman's knowledge creates the breach that leads to Ayya's withdrawal.

Q5

What happens in the court case against Ayya?

A.

The Producers' Council files allegations that Ayya never acted, branding the group as fraudsters. A court case follows, with Ayya's family presenting footage from Dhanapal's film as evidence. Dhanapal claims they stole his film, but the footage becomes an exhibit in the proceedings. The judge observes Dhanapal's acting and asks him to perform in the film, but Dhanapal refuses, implying Ayya was the true performer.

The legal battle stems from Dhanapal's pressure after Parasuraman discovers the deception and Ayya withdraws permanently.

Q6

Why does the judge ask Dhanapal to perform in court?

A.

The judge asks Dhanapal to perform after watching the footage, testing whether Dhanapal can replicate the action sequences seen in the film. When Dhanapal refuses, it reinforces the implication that Ayya was the actual performer, not just a name being exploited. This moment becomes crucial evidence supporting Ayya's true involvement.

This dramatic intervention occurs after footage is presented as evidence, giving the judge direct observation of the performances.

Q7

What does the judge's statement mean?

A.

The judge declares that a man cannot be separated from his art. This means Ayya, though not physically present on set, remains intrinsically connected to the performances he inspired through Saravanan. The ruling acknowledges that artistic contribution transcends physical presence, Ayya's creative energy, guidance, and spirit are inseparable from the work produced.

The statement builds on the earlier revelation that Ayya acted because he genuinely liked the story, showing his conscious artistic intent.

A.

During Panjali Sabadham rehearsals, Saravanan bows to the audience even when the curtains remain closed. Parasuraman interprets this as Ayya's spirit acting through him, a moment where the ghostly presence connects with the audience just as Ayya did during his lifetime. It becomes the key sign that Ayya's artistic essence guides Saravanan's performances.

This bowing gesture appears early and becomes the proof point for Parasuraman's conviction that Ayya's spirit performs through Saravanan.

A.

After the court case, a statue of Ayya is unveiled in front of his theatre. This honors the lifelong bond between artist and craft, celebrating both his theatre work and his posthumous film contributions. The statue symbolizes how art outlives the artist, exactly the theme the judge affirmed in court.

The statue represents the culmination of the judge's ruling that art and artist cannot be separated, made physical in the community.
