A fire rips through a recently renovated mental asylum, opened by Health Minister Rajarathinam to improve mental healthcare, and 38 patients are burned alive. Crime reporter Deepak unveils a shocking truth: the blaze was staged by an organ-trafficking mafia to cover up the harvesting of organs from the mentally disabled. He passes this explosive information to Rajarathinam and his assistant Janaki, [Anjali Rao], but before they can reveal the conspiracy and the deeper institutional corruption feeding it, the mafia strikes and eliminates them.
Meanwhile, Saravedi Saravanan, [Nakul], is a down-on-his-luck actor who survives by cheating women he pretends to love and by deceiving business owners with fake “sponsorship deals.” He spends his days drinking with friends, while Neena, [Aanchal Munjal], an aspiring screenwriter, hunts for a strong script to win over her film producer, [Manobala]. Neena follows Saravanan with her friends and quickly discerns his misdeeds, yet she also sees the potential for a compelling story in a reform arc. She reaches out, and though she only speaks to him over the phone, he is charmed by her voice and agrees to seek a real job.
Fortune complicates matters when Saravanan’s father suffers a heart attack, prompting him to start driving his father’s ambulance to earn an honest living. He’s recruited to drive a mourning family led by an old man, [Nassar], and transport the body of a supposed relative. The truth is darker: the family is a mafia fabrication, and the body is Deepak’s, disposed of in the forests. Saravanan manages to escape with Deepak’s body and the ambulance, narrowly avoiding the criminals.
Neena learns more when two women at a shopping mall—who had been mourning earlier—turn out to be the same pair she had followed. She realizes something is terribly wrong and reaches out to Saravanan. He has also picked up a call from Deepak’s cell phone—containing the mafia’s evidence—from Janaki, who is being chased by the criminals.
The two angle-closing clues bring Neena, her friends, and Janaki to Rajarathinam’s wife, [Meera Krishnan], who reveals there is one honest, strong police officer who can help: ACP Suryanarayana [Prakash Raj]. With this lead, Saravanan abandons the ambulance and carries Deepak’s body and the crucial evidence to a rendezvous point. He stops at a mosque, where his father’s lullaby of encouragement—to do good even in the face of danger—gives him courage, and he proceeds with the body toward the awaiting officers.
Ambushed by the mafia, Saravanan fights to survive, but Suryanarayana and his team arrive just in time to turn the tide. The officer orders Martin, a news reporter, to live-broadcast the contents of Deepak’s cell phone, revealing that Shiva, Rajarathinam’s assistant, is the true mastermind behind the organ-trafficking network. Shiva, who confronts Suryanarayana, is ultimately shot dead by the ACP after Saravanan’s stand buys him a moment of resistance.
With the evidence exposed and the mastermind down, the organ-trafficking operation is dismantled. In a definitive press interview, Suryanarayana explains the demand for organs and the importance of legal donation, urging citizens to consider signing up as donors. He ends by acknowledging that the real hero of this story isn’t the police or the government, but an ordinary citizen who chose to stand up against injustice—leaving the title character unnamed, a nod to the power of collective action. Back home, Saravanan watches the interview with his friends, sipping tea and quietly savoring the small victory.

Explore frequently asked questions about Sei (2018) with spoiler-rich answers covering the full plot summary, major story beats, character motivations, hidden details, and ending meaning. This movie summary FAQ helps explain confusing scenes, plot twists, and narrative decisions in clear, searchable detail.
After Saravanan's father suffers a heart attack, Saravanan decides to earn an honest living by driving the family ambulance. This marks a turning point in his life as he moves away from scamming people to finding legitimate work, though this decision inadvertently pulls him into the dangerous criminal underworld.
Earlier scenes show Saravanan drinking with friends and living off deceptive schemes, making his choice for honest work a significant character shift.
Saravanan is hired to drive a mourning family transporting a corpse, but he discovers the body is actually crime reporter Deepak's. The mafia intended to dispose of Deepak in the forests to hide the organ trafficking conspiracy. Saravanan manages to escape with both the body and Deepak's cell phone containing the crucial evidence.
Shiva, who is Rajarathinam's assistant, is revealed as the true mastermind behind the organ trafficking network. He orchestrates the asylum fire to cover up illegal organ harvesting from mentally disabled patients and orders the murders of both Health Minister Rajarathinam and reporter Deepak to silence anyone who gets too close to the truth.
Shiva's position as Rajarathinam's trusted assistant provides him with insider access to cover the crimes effectively.
Neena, an aspiring screenwriter, sees potential in Saravanan's life story of deception and eventual redemption. She believes his reform arc could make a compelling, marketable script for her film producer. Her initial interest is professional, but she genuinely wants to guide him toward a better path.
Saravanan stops at a mosque while carrying Deepak's body toward the rendezvous point with ACP Suryanarayana. His father calls him there and sings a lullaby of encouragement, urging him to do good even in the face of danger. This moment gives Saravanan the courage to continue despite the overwhelming risks.
ACP Suryanarayana orders reporter Martin to live-broadcast the contents of Deepak's cell phone directly from the ambush site. This exposes the organ trafficking conspiracy and reveals Shiva as the mastermind. The broadcast enables the public to witness the corruption and leads to the immediate dismantling of the criminal network.
Janaki directs Neena and her friends to Rajarathinam's wife Meera, who reveals that ACP Suryanarayana is the one honest police officer who can help them. With this lead, they coordinate with him to receive the evidence and plan the public exposure of the organ trafficking operation.
Neena discovers that the two women she saw mourning at the mall are the same pair she had followed earlier with Saravanan. This proves the mourning family was a mafia fabrication designed to trick Saravanan into transporting Deepak's body, confirming that the entire operation was staged by criminals.
At the press conference, ACP Suryanarayana deliberately leaves the citizen-hero unnamed, stating that the real hero isn't the police or government but an ordinary citizen who chose to stand up against injustice. This nod to collective action emphasizes that anyone can be a hero, not just the main character.
The mafia staged the fire at the newly renovated mental asylum to cover up their organ harvesting operations. They targeted mentally disabled patients because they were vulnerable and unlikely to be missed. The fire killed 38 patients and provided a convenient distraction while they continued their illegal organ trade.
Janaki, Rajarathinam's assistant, narrowly escapes the mafia's initial murder spree. She manages to flee and remains in hiding while being chased by criminals. She later contacts Deepak's cell phone, which is in Saravanan's possession, connecting the key characters together.
