In Ming-era China, a power-hungry and sadistic eunuch, Eunuch Wang Chun, wins the favor of a feeble-minded emperor and tightens his grip on the imperial secret police, the Brocade Guards. Under his command, this malevolent figure can openly strike at anyone who dares to oppose him, wielding false imperial decrees to order assassinations that bolster his vast control. The leader of the Guards, Captain Zhao Wu Yi, is subjected to both physical and psychological torment as Wang cultivates fear and loyalty, reshaping the political landscape to suit his whims.

At the heart of the resistance stands Bu Fa, the sergeant’s eldest son, a loyal soldier caught between family and duty. Bu Fa’s wife, Xueliang, and their young child become fugitives as Wang’s reach expands, turning relatives into pawns and targets. The plot thickens as three generals, who dared defy Wang’s corruption, meet their deaths at the hands of Wang’s sisterhood of assassins. Bu Fa, initially compelled to carry out orders, kills one general but, upon learning the truth, chooses mercy and lies to his father about the executions. This act of deception plants the seed of a deep, personal fracture within Zhao’s family and among the broader military ranks.

The tension escalates when the surviving generals attempt a final strike against Wang during a tranquil outing, only to be brutally slain by the eunuch in a fierce display of rage. The fallout is swift: Bu Fa and his family become hunted by the very guards who were once their allies, and the once-proud father figure—Captain Zhao Wu Yi—now regards his son as a traitor. The family fractures further as Bu Fa turns to alcohol to numb the pain of betrayal and the weight of his decisions.

In a brutal turn of events, Wang’s personal guard is killed by Bu Fa, prompting a ruthless ultimatum: Wang demands Bu Fa’s head within a week, threatening to wipe out Zhao’s entire lineage if he does not comply. Zhao responds by pursuing his own kin, sending his brother to kill Bu Fa or face annihilation of the clan. Bu Fa is ambushed during a training session and confronts his uncle, discovering the letter that ordered his death. Although Bu Fa refuses to betray his kin, a fatal clash unfolds, and he unwittingly kills Wu Ji when the latter lunges from behind. Before dying, Wu Ji urges his daughter, Xiao Nan, to complete the mission of eradicating Bu Fa, a plan that soon unravels as Bu Fa defends himself and Xiao Nan’s deadly scheme ends with her own death. Bu Fa is left gravely wounded, rescued by an unseen ally—revealed only later as his younger brother, Bu Qun—whose selfless sacrifice buys time for Bu Fa’s family to endure.

Bu Qun adopts a quiet, sacrificial path, disguising himself in a suicide mission to draw off pursuers and die in Bu Fa’s stead, granting the family a fragile peace. The tragedy deepens as Bu Qun’s severed head is carried to Zhao, and the weight of guilt crushes Zhao, who can no longer meekly bow to Wang’s demands. The eunuch remains unaware of Bu Fa’s true face, and Zhao cunningly toys with Wang by offering Bu Qun’s head—revealing his own cleverness but also his lingering sorrow.

In the climactic finale, a determined Bu Fa abducts the emperor during a hunting trip and challenges Wang to a duel amid the mountains. The duel ends with Bu Fa delivering the final blow, severing Wang’s power and ending the eunuch’s grip on the realm. With Wang’s defeat, Bu Fa declares a return to peace, discarding the sword as proof of Wang’s demise and setting out to build a quiet life with his son, free from the shadow of tyranny.
