During the early Han Dynasty, a young girl named Du YunXi Luo Jin endures a tragic past when her mother is unjustly executed during palace conflicts. As she matures, YunXi unexpectedly finds herself within the palace walls, entering as a maid. Her exceptional cleverness surfaces early on, especially when she masterminds a secret swap involving Lady Li’s child, which impresses the powerful Empress Dowager Lü. Recognizing her intelligence, the Empress Dowager assigns YunXi a covert mission to infiltrate the court of Liu Heng, the King of Dai, under a new identity as Dou Yifang Myolie Wu Hang-Yee to serve as a spy.

YunXi’s mission is fraught with danger and suspicion, as she is dispatched alongside Zhou Yafu He Shengming, a general who distrusts her, and her loyal servant Mo Xueyuan Yang Mi, who secretly shares her true identity. Upon arriving in Dai, YunXi observes King Liu Heng’s William Feng seemingly carefree and indulgent lifestyle, but gradually uncovers his genuine concern for his people and his desire to restore stability to his realm. Her initial intent to spy becomes complicated as she starts to sympathize with Liu Heng’s plight, especially after witnessing his kindness and the genuine love he shows her.

Amidst palace wars, the story also explores the complex relationship between YunXi and Liu Heng’s children, especially Liu Qi, who grows into a capable but estranged young man. Liu Qi’s ascension as Emperor Jing brings new power struggles, including the rebellion of the Seven States, which YunXi influences with her wisdom and political savvy. Her influence helps Liu Qi navigate turbulent times, although tragedy strikes with the mysterious assassination of Liu Wu and the fraught succession battles involving Wang Zhi and other noble factions. In her later years, now Empress Dowager, YunXi witnesses the continuation of palace intrigues, the rise of Liu Che Gao Hao as Emperor Wu, and the emergence of new alliances. As she looks back on her life, she reflects with sadness and wisdom, offering advice to future generations of women in the palace. Her legacy is marked by her sharp intellect, resilience, and unwavering love for her family, which ultimately leads to her peaceful passing, having helped shape the course of Chinese history.

In the final scene, the aging YunXi shares reflection and guidance with young maidens, including Wei Zifu, future Empress Wei, reminding them to embrace their tears and joys of the past, as they will become part of their future stories.
