Jacqueline Trent (Jackie), a compassionate social worker, discovers she is eight weeks pregnant, a revelation that unsettles her and sets the emotional tone of the story. Her husband, Idris Elba, who plays Mark, senses something is off as she becomes less intimate and more contemplative. The film then follows a day-to-day mix of intimate tension, ambiguous realities, and quiet, symbolic moments that thread through their lives.

Meanwhile her son Jerome (JJ), Kai Francis Lewis, distractingly draws wing-like symbols on the misty windows at school, while bird motifs subtly appear throughout the film. Lauryn, Janelle Frimpong, his older schoolmate, comments that German isn’t even a proper language as she tries to comfort JJ, pushing back against the teacher’s ambiguously racist remarks. In a moment that blends childhood curiosity with a sense of peril, JJ feeds a surprisingly friendly magpie and then demonstrates how to coax another wild bird into his hands. The experiment turns tragic when Lauryn handles the bird too roughly, injuring it; JJ’s attempt to rehabilitate the creature ends in its death, a sobering event that leads him to bury the bird in the yard with a heavy, quiet solemnity.

Jackie discusses her pregnancy with Bernie, Sharlene Whyte, her friend and coworker, as well as JJ’s godmother, using indirect terms about whether she should continue the pregnancy. Her husband Mark senses something is wrong as she remains distant and less intimate. A surreal moment arrives when water unexpectedly pours onto her while she sits in the bathroom, a symbolic motif that repeats later, each time with greater intensity, culminating in a monsoon-like surge that intensifies the emotional storm around her.

Another coworker comments on the clients they serve in the welfare office, reflecting prejudices, and Bernie questions Jackie’s honesty and sanity regarding the pregnancy’s origins, though the true origins remain elusive to the audience until the film’s end. As the pregnancy progresses, Mark learns from JJ that he can apparently see the baby inside his mother’s womb, a revelation that unsettles him deeply given his history of miscarriages. He questions Jackie in incomplete, pointed sentences, insisting on clarity about their estrangement and the timing of conception, while JJ and Lauryn listen from nearby, absorbing the tension.

In a moment of crisis, Jackie, overwhelmed by fear and doubt, attempts to harm herself with a sharp instrument; she and the baby survive after Mark rushes them to the hospital. JJ ends up in a fight with another student after Lauryn reveals details to their peers, underscoring the social pressure surrounding their family’s situation. Jackie undergoes compulsory counseling, where she is questioned about her visions and her belief that she is delivering the Second Coming. The couple eventually separates, stepping back from each other as they navigate an uncertain future.

A year passes, and Mark and Jackie attempt a fragile reconciliation during the baby’s first birthday party at their home. They watch the infant begin to walk, a small, hopeful milestone. In a final, eerie, wordless moment, JJ carries the baby to the grave of the bird he failed to rescue; the baby places a hand on the grave, and the bird appears to rise from the earth, returning to the sky in a sudden, life-affirming gesture that suggests a mysterious renewal beyond understanding.
