Ann Uekusa and her mother Miwako relocate to Shimane to live with her grandparents. In the new town, Ann befriends Daigo, Fuji, and Shika as she adjusts to a small-town life.

Miwako commits suicide, shaking Ann's world. Daigo steps in to help Ann cope with the loss, and their bond deepens into love.

Ann's estranged father arrives from Tokyo, prompting questions about her future. She contemplates moving to Tokyo to live with him but ultimately decides to stay in Shimane. She tells Daigo about her decision, and it seems he should go to Tokyo.

Ann and Fuji relocate to Tokyo, where Fuji attends an elite high school. Ann reconnects with the friends she left behind in Shimane and tries to rebuild her social circle in the city.

In Tokyo, Ann grows closer to Fuji, developing a bond that creates tension with Daigo who remains tied to Shimane. The evolving relationships test the loyalties of Ann and her friends.

Back in Shimane, Shika learns the truth about her parentage, which unsettles her. In her confusion, she begins to fall for Daigo, adding complexity to their circle.

Ann returns to Shimane and faces emotional turmoil caused by Shika. Her fragile state helps drive a wedge between her and Daigo, leading to their breakup.

Ann ends her relationship with Daigo and goes back to Tokyo. She begins a relationship with Fuji, but the romance does not endure because it lacks genuine connection.

Daigo rejects Shika's advances, and rumors spread that he is interested in his middle school classmate Ayumu, who has helped him study for university and aims to become a teacher.

As graduation nears, Ann learns that her father is dating Kaede Kuroki and that she is pregnant with Ann's half-sister. The familial revelations complicate Ann's view of her future.

After attending her middle school reunion, Ann spends time with Daigo, who urges her to pursue her own happiness, free from others' expectations.

Six years later, Ann meets Keiichiro Sakura and they become engaged. She soon discovers he uses people for his own gain, and the engagement is terminated.

Almost a week after the broken engagement, Ann travels to Okayama where Daigo teaches elementary school. Her grandmother fears she will follow her mother's fate. After a suicide attempt on the beach, she is hospitalized, and Daigo asks her to marry him.

Ann and Daigo marry and are shown with their infant son Ryo. Fuji chooses to marry his cousin Mariko despite family opposition, and Shika leaves Shimane to work for her uncle in America.
