Saltburn (2023) Timeline Explained – Every Event in Order

Felix invited Oliver to Saltburn after Oliver's father died, offering him a place to recover from his grief. Felix felt empathy for Oliver because he had shared details about his troubled background, including his parents' struggles with substance abuse and mental health issues. This apparent vulnerability made Felix want to help his new friend.

Foreshadowing: Felix mentions his own family struggles early in their friendship, creating a foundation for his sympathetic gesture.

Oliver fabricated the story about his father's death and his parents' struggles to gain sympathy from Felix and insert himself into the wealthy Catton world. When Felix visited Oliver's home in Prescot, he discovered the truth: Oliver's father was alive and his parents lived stable, normal lives. This betrayal of trust became a turning point in their relationship.

Foreshadowing: Oliver's initial backstory details are vague and inconsistent when he first meets Felix.

Farleigh was expelled from Saltburn after Sir James learned that Farleigh intended to sell some family valuables. This gave Sir James the justification to remove Farleigh from the household, though the underlying tension between Farleigh and Oliver had been building throughout the summer. Oliver's manipulations had created friction between Farleigh and the family.

Foreshadowing: Oliver deliberately avoids befriending Farleigh and instead creates conflict between them from their first meeting.

Felix was found dead in the hedge maze at Saltburn. While the exact circumstances remain ambiguous, Oliver suggests that Farleigh's drug involvement at the party contributed to Felix's death. Oliver uses this tragedy to further isolate Farleigh from the family, leading James to cut ties with his nephew. The death is officially treated as accidental or drug-related.

Foreshadowing: The party with drug activity creates the conditions for Felix's fatal encounter in the maze.

Venetia committed suicide in a bathtub, driven to despair by the catastrophic events that unfolded at Saltburn. She blamed Oliver for orchestrating the ruin of her family, specifically for Felix's death and Farleigh's expulsion. Her accusatory words toward Oliver ('slut, slut, slut') before her death suggest she understood or suspected his manipulative role in the family's destruction.

Foreshadowing: Venetia's hostility toward Oliver grows after Felix's death, and she directly accuses him of ruining the family.

After Felix and Venetia died, Oliver remained at Saltburn with Lady Elspeth, who became increasingly attached to him. When Elspeth fell ill, Oliver confessed to orchestrating the tragic events that destroyed the Catton family, manipulating Felix, causing Farleigh's expulsion, and indirectly causing the deaths. Despite this revelation, Elspeth entrusted all her possessions, including the estate, to Oliver in her will.

Foreshadowing: Elspeth's growing dependence on Oliver throughout the film sets up his eventual control over her.

Even after Oliver confessed to manipulating the family and causing the deaths of her children, Elspeth chose to give him everything. This could reflect her psychological state after enduring such trauma, her need for companionship, or a disturbing form of acceptance. Oliver's confession seems to deepen rather than destroy her trust, possibly because confronting the truth was too devastating for her.

Foreshadowing: Elspeth's attachment to Oliver intensifies as the family deteriorates around her.

Oliver removed Elspeth's life support to finally claim ownership of Saltburn and the Catton family fortune. With her death, he would become the sole inheritor of the estate. This final act of murder completed his methodical takeover of the Catton family, eliminating the last obstacle between him and his obsession with possessing Saltburn.

Foreshadowing: Oliver's earlier confession to Elspeth about his manipulations previews his willingness to do whatever is necessary to own the estate.

Oliver made sexual advances toward Farleigh, which created tension and conflict between them. When Felix confronted Oliver about accusations regarding inappropriate activities between them and Farleigh, Oliver denied everything. This confrontation added to the growing rift in the household and contributed to Farleigh's eventual expulsion, as Oliver's lies and manipulations painted Farleigh in a negative light.

Foreshadowing: From their first meeting, Oliver and Farleigh are antagonistic, with Oliver actively working to undermine Farleigh's position in the family.

When Oliver confessed his deep feelings for Felix, Felix rejected him and urged him to seek help. This rejection came after Felix had already discovered Oliver's lies about his family background, which had betrayed their friendship. Felix's refusal, combined with the discovery that Oliver had deceived him about his entire personal history, made any romantic connection impossible.

Foreshadowing: Felix's growing discomfort with Oliver's excessive attention foreshadows his complete rejection.

After Venetia's suicide and seeing how Oliver had manipulated his family, Sir James resorted to bribery to get Oliver to leave Saltburn. He offered Oliver money in exchange for his departure, desperate to remove the person he now recognized as the architect of his family's destruction. Oliver reluctantly accepted the bribe but returned years later when Elspeth summoned him.

Foreshadowing: James's growing suspicion of Oliver intensifies after each tragedy in the household.
