Long ago, Lady Boreal, Queen of the Northern Lights, transferred the last of her power into Rudolph's red nose when he was born. This power makes his nose glow to stop evil and protect his friends. The moment marks the origin of Rudolph's unique gift and its protective purpose.

Years after Rudolph's birth, Winterbolt awakes from his deep sleep and discovers Rudolph's glowing power. He vows to dispose of Rudolph to regain control of the North Pole. The threat he poses sets the stage for a looming conflict.

An ice cream man named Milton arrives in a hot-air balloon and tells Rudolph and Frosty about his plan to marry Lilly Loraine's daughter Lainie if they star in the Circus by the Sea to help lift the circus out of debt.
