Santa Claus Paul Frees receives an urgent letter from his friend Father Time, asking for help to find Happy the Baby New Year before midnight on New Year’s Eve, or else December 31 will stretch on forever. A fierce snowstorm blankets the world, and Santa sends out Rudolph Billie Mae Richards to track down the baby before the clock strikes the end of the old year.
The chase pivots on a perilous plan by an evil giant vulture named Eon the Terrible. Eon believes he can cheat fate by kidnapping Happy, ensuring the year never ends and sealing his own doomed fate in ice and snow on January 1. To stop time, he must keep Happy out of reach, so Rudolph must race across a treacherous route to recover the newborn year.
Rudolph is joined on his quest by General Ticker and Quart the camel, a clock-bearing creature who carries time itself in his hump. The trio travels to a castle guarded by Father Time, hidden Beyond the Sands of Time. Here, Father Time suspects that Happy, who once fled due to being teased for his big ears, may be hiding on the Archipelago of Last Years, a remote cluster of islands where the Old Years retire and rule over a landscape that mirrors the year they preside over.
The journey takes a dramatic turn when Eon ambushes Rudolph at sea. A courageous rescue comes from an unlikely ally: Big Ben, a sperm whale adorned with a clock on his tail, who ferries Rudolph across the ocean to reach the archipelago.
On arrival, Rudolph and his friends split their search across a series of ancient, time-warped islands. They first visit an island ruled by a caveman named O.M. (One Million B.C.), whose world is populated by friendly dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures. Their quest to find Happy continues as they face repeated encounters with Eon, who looms as a constant threat.
The voyage Then takes them to islands representing different eras—4000 B.C., 1492, 1893, and 1965—each offering its own quirks and challenges. Yet Happy remains elusive because he wandered away after his hat fell off in a moment of danger, revealing his oversized ears to the dinosaurs, who laughed at him and sent him fleeing again.
Next they reach the island of 1023 (pronounced “ten to three”), ruled by a stout Scottish knight whose homeland is filled with medieval trappings and a myriad of fairy-tale and Mother Goose figures. Meanwhile, Happy befriends the Three Bears, sharing laughs and play, but his ears become a source of self-doubt again when he is asked to remove his hat and reveal them during a game with Baby Bear. The moment unsettles him, and he slips away, leaving his new friends worried.
The search leads to the island of 1776, a reflection of Colonial America ruled by Sev (1776), who bears a Benjamin Franklin-like appearance. After a bright Independence Day parade, Happy seems to be ready to stay, but Eon reappears and abducts him, taking him to his lair on a stark island called No-Name, which lies “due north of the North Pole.”
With time running out, Rudolph and his companions press on in pursuit. They catch up to Eon, but the villain uses an avalanche to trap them inside giant snowballs. Rudolph uses a clever trick—he melts his own nose to carve a way through ice and climbs to Eon’s nest, where he finally finds Happy. Happy, who has grown weary of running, is unsure about leaving, but Rudolph shares a heartfelt moment: he explains how he’s faced bullying because of his own unique features, and how seeing Happy’s ears makes him feel warmth and happiness. He asks Happy to show him his ears, and when Happy reveals them, Rudolph bursts into a hearty, contagious laugh.
That laughter proves transformative. Eon awakens from his cold calculation and, upon seeing Happy’s ears and Rudolph’s warmth, bursts into mirth of his own. The moment is different from the others; the warmth spreads, and Eon’s ice-like intentions melt away. The once-ominous threat becomes a source of warmth and joy, and Rudolph realizes that happiness is stronger than fear.
With Eon defeated by the warmth of goodwill, Santa arrives just in time. The group returns to Father Time’s castle, carrying Happy as the clock nears the crucial moment before the final bong of the year. The New Year is celebrated not with ice, but with a fresh sense of possibility—designated as “19-Wonderful.” The story closes on a hopeful note, as the Baby New Year’s arrival signals a year filled with wonder and kindness, thanks to the courage of Rudolph, the help of his friends, and a shared belief that laughter and warmth can outpace even the darkest plans.
