Romance in Manhattan

Karel Novak, a naive Czech immigrant, lands in New York with only $58, believing it to be enough to enter the U.S. Immigration officials inform him he needs $200 or he will be deported, leading Novak to jump from a deportation ship and wander the streets. He is rescued by dock workers but loses his money, leaving him stranded and desperate.

Novak wanders into a theatre and shares a meal with chorus girls, where Sylvia Dennis questions him. He refuses money but expresses a desire to find work. Sylvia invites him to her apartment, where her brother Frank, a young newsboy, is present, setting the stage for their developing relationship.

Sylvia introduces a plan for Novak to work during the day so Frank can attend school in the afternoons. Novak receives blankets from Sylvia to sleep on the roof, and she explains the hardships of the Depression environment they are living through.

While out for a meal with Sylvia and Frank, Novak is recognized by a dock worker who wants to return his $58. Novak, fearing being labeled an illegal immigrant, denies his identity, which prevents him from reclaiming his money and raises concerns about his legal status.

Novak secures a job as a cab driver, proudly showing Sylvia his taxi. Sylvia mentions her show has closed, and Novak expresses happiness about supporting her and Frank, establishing a sense of stability and future plans.

During a cab drivers' strike, Novak returns home early and helps Sylvia with chores like laundry, showing his willingness to support her. Sylvia talks about her hopes of marrying a rich man, and Novak kisses her, indicating romantic feelings.

Sylvia is summoned to court to fight for custody of her brother Frank, with accusations about her age and Novak's involvement. The judge rules she must give Frank to an institution until she marries, forcing Sylvia to face separation from Frank.
