Richie (2017) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Richie (2017), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

The film opens on Boxing Day with Megha, Shraddha Srinath, a Chennai-based news reporter, as she digs into the mysterious death of a young man named Richard K. Sagayam, better known as Richie, who was shot during a Santa Claus parade in the port city of Thoothukudi. Megha has a personal connection to the case—Richie grew up at the reform school where her parents once worked—and she travels to the bustling port to cover the story for her article.

By talking to villagers, Megha uncovers a troubling truth: Richie was wrongly sent to the reform school for killing a classmate, while his childhood best friend Raghu, Bharat Raj, was the real culprit. Raghu managed to flee, evading capture, and the police subsequently framed Richie to close the case. The tragedy is compounded by Richie’s father, the local priest, Father A. K. Sagayam, Prakash Raj, who stops visiting his son after witnessing him being tormented at the reform school. This family rift casts a long shadow over everyone involved.

After leaving the reform school, Richie returns to his hometown and becomes a henchman for Isaac Annachi, Guruappa Krishna Reddy, the powerful don who controls the fishermen and divides the sea’s spoils among his network. The underworld grip is clear: anything taken from the sea is shared between the fishermen and Annachi’s crew, a system that props up violence and fear in the town.

One evening, Kaaka Peter, a local fisherman Elango Kumaravel, finds an ancient statue in the sea and tries to sell it on his own to a smuggler from Kolkata. Annachi quickly learns of the statue and orders Richie to retrieve it, pulling him deeper into a dangerous game. Peter’s best friend, Selvam, also known as Selvaa, a motorboat mechanic Natarajan Subramaniam, is in love with Peter’s sister Philomina, [Lakshmi Priyaa](/actor/lakshmi-priyaa, and he joins the hunt to locate Peter and the statue.

Meanwhile, Raghu, now working for the smuggler, steals the statue and returns to Thoothukudi for the first time in years. He visits his widowed mother Radha, Tulasi, and makes a hopeful promise to take her to Dubai, where they could start a new life away from the trouble of the port city.

On Christmas Eve, Annachi learns that Peter sold the statue to a Kolkata smuggler who has apparently fled to Thoothukudi. Radha informs him that her long-lost son has just returned from Kolkata, linking the two cases in Annachi’s mind. Sensing a common thread, Annachi sends Richie to retrieve the statue from Raghu. In a brutal turn, Richie tortures Peter in Raghu’s presence and bluntly reveals the scars of his reform-school years, declaring that he can never truly change. Yet he hesitates, letting Raghu go temporarily while keeping Peter captive, as if testing the limits of loyalty and power. Raghu, desperate to reunite with his mother, asks to be taken to the train station the next day so they can leave the city forever.

Christmas morning escalates as Raghu tracks down Murugesh, Aadukalam Murugadoss, a reform-school friend and fellow member of Annachi’s gang. Raghu steals the statue from Murugesh’s house and tries to flee, but Richie and his men catch him. In a chilling confidant moment, Richie tells Murugesh that he still cares for Raghu and plans to help him escape with the statue and Raghu’s mother, but the plan spirals out of control. While driving Raghu toward the train station, Raghu grows suspicious of Richie and attempts to kill him; instead, he is killed by his childhood friend, Murugesh. Murugesh and their allies then help Richie dispose of Raghu’s body in the sea. Radha waits at the train station for a son who will never return.

Back at the parade, Sagayam stops by Annachi’s house to bless his own son for the first time in years, a brief moment of warmth amid the chaos. Selvaa uncovers Peter’s bloodied mask in Richie’s jeep, a clue that convinces him that Richie killed Peter. He steals Murugesh’s gun and shoots Richie as the parade dances on, sending shockwaves through the crowd. Murugesh then rifles after Selvaa and shoots him down as well, cementing a brutal chain of consequences. A different goon finds the statue and escapes with it, turning the festive parade into a scene of panic and pursuit.

In the aftermath, Peter escapes his captivity, and Murugesh faces arrest for Selvaa’s murder. The film closes with Murugesh, Annachi, and others telling Megha their side of the story, leaving her to craft her report and the town to reckon with the costs of greed, power, and violence that threaded the entire narrative.
