Set ten years after the original, the film opens with a prologue in which a discontented couple tries to leave the idyllic town of Stepford and are killed by the police chief Howard Witt. The eerie calm of the town is immediate and unsettling, hinting at a deeper secret behind Stepford’s flawless exterior.

Spirited investigative TV reporter Kaye Foster [Sharon Gless] arrives in Stepford to cover a profile of a town famed for the lowest crime and divorce rates, and for the tightest real-estate market in the country. She’s drawn by the contrast between beauty and submission she quickly observes among the town’s women, who all take a pill four times a day whenever a chilling siren sounds (they insist it’s for a thyroid condition). This first impression sets the tone for a mystery that blends social satire with creeping dread.

Kaye meets Megan Brady [Julie Kavner] and her husband Andy Brady [Don Johnson], newcomers who are navigating Stepford’s peculiar social fabric. Megan comes off as refreshingly practical, while Andy is interviewing to join the Stepford Police Department and become a member of the Stepford Men’s Association, led by the refined but vaguely hostile Dale “Diz” Corbett [Arthur Hiller]. Seeing Megan’s potential, Kaye—needing a research assistant—quickly hires her, drawn by the promise of an ordinary life that may be hiding something far more sinister.

The unsettling pattern of events intensifies when Barbara Parkinson [Audra Lindley] nearly runs Kaye down, then behaves oddly at the scene and later can’t recall the incident. The hotel manager Wally [Mason Adams] seems to tremble on the edge of revealing a crucial secret about his wife’s apparent incapacity to change, while another attempt on Kaye’s life underscores the danger closing in around her.

Andy accepts his new post with the Stepford Police, and Megan mysteriously disappears for a few days after having settled on a house. Suspicion drives Kaye to a garden party at the Men’s Association, where three new “sisters” are welcomed into the fold, including Megan. The women wear frilly, outdated fashions and exhibit the same brained-within-brained, subservient behavior that stalks the town. A crucial, whispered explanation emerges when Diz speaks privately to the husbands: the wives have been brainwashed and kept compliant by the so-called thyroid pills. To stay subservient, the women must abstain from alcohol, never miss their medication, and avoid overstimulation, lest they become hostile or violent. Kaye is discovered and narrowly escapes, and the men mobilize to track her down.

Determined to save Megan, Kaye confronts her at Megan’s home, discards the pills, and forces Megan to drink vodka. Megan’s initial resistance gives way to a frantic struggle in which the two women subdue Andy. With Megan now in a precarious position, Kaye, disguised as a Stepford wife, enlists Wally’s help to escape; he betrays them, but Kaye had anticipated this move and manages to slip away. Their attempted train escape fails, and Megan is taken to the Men’s Association for reconditioning. In a tense confrontation, Kaye arrives just in time to threaten Diz with a gun, while Megan repeatedly sounds the pill siren to trigger a town-wide reaction.

The plan devolves into chaos as all the women of Stepford overdose on their pills, becoming disoriented and violently agitated. Andy reappears, offering a glimmer of hope for reconciliation and escape with Megan. Yet Diz catches Kaye, and as he is poised to kill her, the vengeful women of Stepford descend. They scream, claw, and tear him apart, pushing him over a balcony in a collective act of retribution. The sight leaves Kaye stunned and horrified, but she seizes the opportunity to slip free and make her escape, carrying with her the unsettling truth about the town’s utopian image.

This stark look at Stepford’s supposed perfection weaves together suspense, social critique, and a survivor’s resolve, offering a vivid portrait of a community that sacrifices individuality for control—and the determined journalist who dares to expose it.
