The Stepford Wives

Successful reality television executive producer Joanna Eberhart finds her career abruptly cut short when a disgruntled participant named Hank attempts to kill her. Following this traumatic event and a subsequent mental breakdown, Joanna relocates with her husband Walter Kresby and their two children from the bustling streets of Manhattan to the serene suburb of Stepford, Connecticut. Here, Joanna forms a friendship with recovering alcoholic Roberta “Bobbie” Markowitz and the flamboyant architect Roger Bannister, who has moved to the area with his partner Jerry, a corporate lawyer.

One day, after witnessing a bizarre episode where Sarah Sunderson dances wildly and then collapses, Joanna engages in a heated conversation with Walter. He harshly reminds her that their children barely know her, their marriage is deteriorating, and her domineering nature drives others away. In a moment of vulnerability, Joanna apologizes and agrees to try to adapt to the other suburban wives’ expectations.

The following day, Joanna, Bobbie, and Roger visit Sarah’s house, only to overhear her upstairs exclaiming joyfully during a moment of intimacy with her husband, Herb. In their hasty exit, they stumble upon a mysterious remote control labeled SARAH, which unexpectedly causes comedic chaos.

Later, Walter and Bobbie’s husband, Dave, attend a Men’s Association meeting with Roger and Jerry. However, Joanna and Bobbie, intrigued, hire a babysitter to spy on the gathering. There, they encounter portraits and a sinister atmosphere, which raises their suspicions. But Roger reassures them everything is fine. The next day, they uncover Roger’s discarded flamboyant clothes and memorabilia, while Jerry leads them to a peculiar town hall meeting where Roger appears to be running for office with a dull demeanor and a conformist agenda. Disturbed by these transformations, Joanna convinces Walter to leave the town.

When Joanna visits Bobbie the next day, she is shocked to see Bobbie’s once-chaotic home now perfectly organized, and in a startling transformation, Bobbie insists she has become a new person, focusing solely on her cookbook. Unbeknownst to her, Bobbie’s hand catches fire, but in her oblivious state, she doesn’t notice as Joanna rushes away to find Walter.

At the Men’s Association, Joanna confronts Walter, who reveals his feelings of emasculation due to Joanna’s assertiveness. Mike Wellington, the association’s leader, chillingly discloses that they implant nano-chips in their wives to turn them into compliant Stepford Wives. Joanna questions the sincerity of these modified women’s love, but Mike merely utters, “>Enjoy,” before leading them into a transformation chamber.

In a surreal turn of events, Joanna and Walter, now joined by Bobbie and Roger, attend a grand ball where, amidst the festivities, Joanna distracts Mike while Walter sabotages the system controlling their wives. The wives then confront their husbands, revealing that Joanna and Walter have resisted the transformations. In a dramatic moment, Joanna decapitates Mike with a candlestick, exposing him as a robotic entity. His wife, Claire, divulges her dark past and motives for creating the Stepford program, ultimately leading to her own demise after a shocking confession.

Fast forward six months, Joanna, now an Emmy-winning documentarian with the revealing film Stepford: The Secret of the Suburbs, alongside Roger, who triumphantly has won a State Senate seat, and Bobbie, a published poet, details how the husbands are under house arrest, undergoing rehabilitation for their misogynistic crimes. The film culminates in a poignant scene showcasing the husbands, now compliant, grocery shopping under the watchful eyes of their empowered wives.
