Renegade Girl

On a rural road in Missouri in 1864, Jean Shelby is approached by Union soldiers who demand she meet their superior officer. She tries to flee but is cornered and forced to accompany them to Major Barker. The tense encounter sets the stage for a dangerous game of information and loyalty.

At Union headquarters, Major Barker arranges to buy information from renegade Chief Whitecloud about Bob Shelby. Barker reveals Whitecloud's goal is to destroy the Shelby family, and pays him to supply the location if true. The exchange seeds Whitecloud's animosity toward Jean and her kin.

Sensing an opportunity, Jean disarms her guard and briefly cripples Barker and Raymond as they check on the commotion. She escapes through a window and rides away on Raymond's horse. Her daring escape marks her transition from captive to fugitive.

Jean rides to her parents' home to warn them of Whitecloud's approach and to get her wounded brother Bob out of danger. They slip away just before Whitecloud and the Union soldiers arrive. The family escapes, hoping to outrun the looming threat.

Whitecloud slips away from the soldiers and finds Raymond's horse out back, turning his attention toward tracking down Jean and Bob. He pursues them through the countryside with ruthless determination. The chase tightens the noose around the Shelby family.

While on the road, Bob collapses and urges Jean to go on without him. He dies at the hands of Whitecloud, sealing Jean's vow of revenge. His death becomes a turning point for Jean's future choices.

Jean and Raymond have a civil conversation after a tense chase. He reveals fragments of his own wartime experience as they talk about the past, and they begin to form a wary trust that blossoms into a closer connection. The moment ends with a kiss and a mutual sense of shared purpose.

Jerry Long and Bob Crandall approach Jean, offering her a place with Quantrail's men to continue fighting after the war. She refuses to be just another outlaw, but reveals that she is wanted for aiding Quantrail, and eventually agrees to join if their target is Whitecloud. She adopts the alias Marie Carrol to fit in.

At a meeting with Jerry, she declares that killing Whitecloud is her sole goal and instructs people to call her Marie Carrol. Jerry pushes for marriage, and she resists, slapping him when he refuses to acknowledge her choice. The band embraces an increasingly ruthless path.

The outlaws learn Whitecloud is headed across the country, and Yankee Cavalry are closing in to intercept. Tensions rise as the group struggles with the harsh realities of outlaw life and nothing goes as planned. Jerry's leadership strains the fragile alliance.

Jerry kills the remaining outlaws to seize control, and Jean discovers from a dying Bob about Jerry's betrayal. She is left alone, and the weight of her choices drives her toward a solitary, despairing path.

Jean and Raymond reunite at Union headquarters, plan to marry, and then pursue Whitecloud one last time. In the climactic duel, Jean shoots Whitecloud but is mortally wounded, dying in Raymond's arms after finally achieving her destination and love.
