Clara Calhoun runs a beauty shop in New York that doubles as a front for an illegal bookmaking operation. One evening, she signals two masked gunmen outside, who burst in and constrain Calhoun and her assistant Marie Westin while demanding the betting money. The robbery unfolds with a tense mix of intimidation and quick action as the money is taken and the shop becomes a crime scene.

A nearby patrolman hears Westin's screams and attempts to intervene at the shop. He is accidentally shot by one robber, while the other robs the place and kills the officer in a swift counterstrike. The two criminals then flee in a laundry truck, with Martin dropping Kowalski off at a doctor's house for medical care.

Kowalski receives medical attention at a doctor's house after the confrontation. While being treated, Martin reminds Kowalski of the plan to implicate Steve Ryan in the crime, keeping Kowalski tied to the scheme.
