Dan Logan and his son Chris are camping when Chris chooses to sleep outside the tent. In the morning, Chris is unconscious and bleeding from his nose, and Dan finds several sheep dead with similar bleeding. The scene establishes a looming, inexplicable threat over their trip.

Dan is rushed to a hospital where doctors run a battery of tests under a cloud of confusion. Dr. Holliford and the staff focus on Dan's symptoms rather than an obvious cause, leaving him anxious and unknowing about his son's condition. The medical mystery hints at something larger at play.

Major Holliford concludes that the Logans were exposed to a deadly nerve agent, MX-3, likely dispersed from the air. Chris's exposure is judged more severe because he slept outdoors. Holliford warns Dan that he may only have about a week to live.

Spencer and Holliford keep up a pretense of treating the Logans while secretly studying the toxin's effects. They monitor Dan's condition and collect data without informing him of the true danger. The Army recognizes the incident may be isolated and mishandled.

Dan heads to the company that makes the nerve agent, kills a guard, and plants dynamite around the building. He then kills a responding police officer before blowing up the facility, aiming to disrupt the source of the toxin.

Dan abducts a stranger at gunpoint and forces him to drive to the military base. He breaches the perimeter by ramming the barrier, showing his willingness to take drastic measures to pursue the truth.

Inside the base, the lingering effects of MX-3 continue to impair Dan, preventing him from making real progress. He begins convulsing in a field as soldiers look on with a mix of alarm and detachment.

Major Holliford arrives and draws blood from Dan's body, signaling the end of the chase. The morning after, soldiers play softball on the field where Dan died, underscoring the human cost of the covert tragedy.
