Webb Garwood, a disgruntled cop with a stubborn streak, is called to handle a troubling report: a peeping Tom observed by Susan Gilvray, whose husband John Gilvray works nights as a radio personality. Webb is not looking for romance, but fate has different plans. He is single and finds himself drawn to the striking, married woman, and what starts as a professional concern soon deepens into a perilous obsession. As the two grow closer, a dangerous chemistry takes root, and Webb begins to bend the rules in a way that threatens to swallow him whole.

The affair accelerates as Webb discovers a sharp, cold calculation behind Susan’s vulnerability: her husband carries a life insurance policy. Seizing the opportunity, Webb crafts a carefully staged ruse to cash in on that policy. In a tense moment of awakening, she warns the doctor, who escapes with the newborn and the Cadillac keys, disrupting Webb’s scheme and sealing the doctor’s role as an unexpected safeguard against further violence.

The revelation that Dr. William James would be drawn into this deadly bind shatters Susan’s trust in Webb. She confronts him with the truth she has uncovered: he not only killed her husband, but he also engineered a plot aimed at silencing those who could reveal the truth. In a race against the law, Webb tries to push his way out by forcing the partner’s reversing car, but the sound of approaching police cars signals the end of the road. Refusing to surrender, Webb heads for the hills, a figure cornered by his own choices. When the moment of reckoning arrives, a sheriff’s deputy fires from afar, ending his flight in a stark, final judgment.
