As the powerful sounds of a nu metal band surge through the atmosphere, the ancient vampire Lestat de Lioncourt awakens from an extended slumber, his slumber interrupted by the vibrant beats that pull him back to life. Driven by an irrepressible desire for artistic expression, he steps into the role of lead vocalist, forming a band known as The Vampire Lestat. With their rapid rise to fame across the globe, Lestat’s lyrics unintentionally expose the existence of vampires, leading him to provocatively challenge his fellow creatures of the night during a daring interview to promote his much-anticipated concert.
Captivated by the allure of Lestat’s music, Jesse Reeves, a dedicated researcher from the paranormal group Talamasca, becomes determined to uncover the truth behind the enigmatic performer. Her mentor, David Talbot, shares insights about Lestat’s true identity, having already speculated about it. He provides her with Lestat’s journal, which details the vampire’s transformation brought about by Marius de Romanus, a former painter, on a Mediterranean isle in 1788. The journal also narrates the awakening of Akasha, the first vampire, stimulated by Marius’ haunting violin melodies.
As Jesse digs deeper into Lestat’s intriguing past, she tracks him down to The Admiral’s Arms, a popular vampire club in London. There, Lestat intervenes, rescuing her from three ruthless assailants. During their confrontation, he unveils the circumstances surrounding Akasha’s revival and the ensuing chaos that follows.
In Los Angeles, Marius pays Lestat a crucial visit, offering a stern warning that the other vampires will not tolerate his ostentatious public image. He urges Lestat to cancel his impending concert, fearing that it has triggered Akasha’s resurgence, and she is now out for vengeance. Meanwhile, Akasha wreaks havoc by incinerating The Admiral’s Arms along with its patrons.
Upon arriving in Los Angeles, Jesse returns Lestat’s journal and expresses an eagerness to understand the essence of being a vampire. Initially resistant, Lestat concedes and takes the time to guide her through the dark realities of his world. However, when Jesse reveals her ambition to join his ranks, Lestat is filled with horror at the sound of her words. He portrays the brutal truths behind vampirism and warns her of the dire consequences that accompany eternal life.
As twilight envelops the sky, Lestat’s concert in Death Valley spirals into pandemonium as a group of vampires ambushes him on stage. Marius, ever loyal, rushes in to assist, effortlessly dispatching most attackers. Unfortunately, their moment of victory is fleeting as Akasha makes her grand entrance, her presence both commanding and foreboding. Taking Lestat to her secluded stronghold, a dangerous and intoxicating fervor develops between them, reducing him to a willing puppet under her control.
Simultaneously, Jesse finds herself drawn back to a childhood memory, where she meets her enigmatic Aunt Maharet, a keeper of ancient vampire secrets. As the threat of Akasha’s scheme for global domination looms large, the Ancient vampires gather to strategize on how to deal with their formidable adversary. In hushed voices, they acknowledge the grim fate awaiting anyone who consumes Akasha’s final drop of blood, a reality none dare speak of.
As the strategy session unfolds, Akasha crashes the gathering, bringing Lestat, who is now influenced by her blood and seemingly under her spell. When she commands him to eliminate Jesse, seeing her as an impediment and a potential meal, Lestat appears to comply. Yet, after tasting Jesse’s life essence, he awakens from his trance, breaking free from Akasha’s grip.
Feeling betrayed, Lestat claims his “rightful place” among the undead. When Akasha presents her arm inviting him to feed, he cleverly turns the tables. With assistance from the Ancients, he begins to drain her life force, gradually weakening her. In a decisive moment, Maharet, the leader of the Ancients, ultimately ends Akasha by consuming her last drop of blood, transforming her into a marble statue and sealing her fate as the newly-crowned Queen of the Damned.
In the aftermath, Jesse, now transformed into a vampire, visits David, accompanied by Lestat, as she returns the sacred journal. As they part, she offers him immortality, which he declines, weighed down by the burden of age. With a sorrowful farewell, Jesse walks into the night with Lestat.
As the stars shimmer above, Marius arrives at David’s office, acutely aware of David’s long-standing fascination with him. They exchange cordial words while Jesse and Lestat slip away into the mortal world, hand in hand, their journey illuminated by the gentle light of the night sky.
