Ria Jaiswal, Urmila Matondkar, is a headstrong loner and the only daughter of a wealthy Mumbai businessman, Mr. Jaiswal, played by Suresh Oberoi. When she heads to Goa for a vacation, she crosses paths with Jai Bhatt, Fardeen Khan, a fashion photographer who is happily married to Geeta Bhatt, Sonali Kulkarni. Jai snaps photos of Ria without her permission and publishes them in the magazine he works for, turning the issue into a sensation. The chief editor soon asks Ria to model for the magazine, but she refuses at first, still smarting from Jai’s unauthorized publishing. Eventually, Jai convinces her to model, and in the process, Ria falls in love with him.
Ria longs to talk about marriage, but when she visits Jai’s home, she is struck by the sight of Geeta and becomes shaken and distraught. This confrontation leaves her emotionally unsettled, and she confesses her feelings to Jai, who is startled by the depth of her emotion. He explains that he would have accepted her love if he were not already married, and he tells Geeta everything, vowing to stay away from Ria. Yet Ria’s fixation only grows; she becomes possessive and finds it hard to forget him. She even attempts suicide, calling him in the middle of the night, and Jai has to rescue and console her. Geeta grows increasingly troubled and urges Jai to file a police complaint, but the couple still tries to repair their relationship and go on a date, only for Ria to break down again and Jai to comfort her once more. Geeta’s anger flares, and she finds herself torn between patience and fear.
At a company party that Jai attends with Geeta, Ria is invited too and openly flirts with Jai in front of his wife, prompting Geeta to leave in a rage. Back home, Jai and Geeta have a fierce argument, and Geeta leaves. She soon regrets her reaction and plans to return, but Ria intrudes and becomes intimate with Jai in front of her. When Geeta catches them, she loses control, slams into a glass table, and is badly hurt. Jai rushes Geeta to the hospital, while Ria’s obsession deepens.
Ria tells Geeta that she should leave Jai so they can be happy together, but Geeta insists that Jai does not love Ria in the way she imagines and that their bond cannot be broken. Faced with Ria’s escalating instability, Jai decides to leave the city to escape the situation. Ria calls him for a final meeting, but he instead goes to Mr. Jaiswal and attempts to reveal the truth. He also calls Geeta, only to hear her being attacked by someone. The terrifying truth emerges: it is Ria, now consumed by her fixation, who has become dangerously unstable. She tries to kill Geeta so she can win Jai, and when Jai arrives, he pleads with her to release Geeta. He offers to leave Geeta to be with Ria, but she advances toward him, and he delivers a hard slap, rendering her unconscious. Mr. Jaiswal arrives with the evidence, and Jai tells him what Ria did.
Six months pass, and Geeta and Jai rebuild their life together, while Ria remains confined in a mental hospital. Her father arrives at Jai’s home on her birthday, asking Jai to meet his daughter one last time. Jai agrees, hoping to bring some peace to Ria. Seeing Jai, Ria’s grip on reality crumbles; she shakes him fiercely, and hospital staff pull them apart. Jai leaves with a heavy heart, carrying the weight of Ria’s fragile mental state and the consequences of their intertwined lives.
