What Happens in Purl: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Purl (2018) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Purl, an anthropomorphic pink-coloured ball of yarn, begins an entry-level position at a company named B.R.O. Capital. She is initially excited to be part of the team, but soon she discovers that her coworkers barely notice her, despite her earnest efforts to fit in.

During a moment of isolation—left behind while her colleagues go out for a group lunch—Purl scans photos of the capital team and sees a uniform look: white men in power suits with similar hairstyles. This stark image motivates her to change her appearance and adopt the mannerisms of her coworkers in an attempt to blend in and be seen.

After the others return, Purl, now speaking and acting like everyone else, catches their attention and is invited to join for drinks. Just before the group heads out, a yellow-colored ball of yarn named Lacy arrives at the office to begin work, and she experiences the same sense of being ignored. Purl befriends Lacy and invites her to join the group for drinks, opening the door to a different kind of workplace dynamic.

Over time, Purl returns to her original appearance, and B.R.O. Capital is shown to be staffed by a more diverse mix of men and balls of yarn, who work together as a team. The story ends on a note that highlights inclusion and collaboration as the office grows into a more varied and cooperative environment.

The questions people ask most about Purl (2018): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why did Purl change her appearance at B.R.O. Capital?

Purl changed her appearance because she felt invisible among her coworkers. After scanning photos of the team and seeing only white men in identical power suits, she realized she didn't fit in. To gain acceptance and be noticed, she altered her look and adopted the confident mannerisms of her colleagues, which eventually earned her an invitation to join them for drinks.

Foreshadowing: Earlier, Purl's isolation during the group lunch highlights her invisibility, setting up her decision to change.

Q2

Why was Purl ignored by her coworkers at the startup?

Purl was ignored because she didn't match the homogeneous team culture. The office photos revealed that B.R.O. Capital was staffed entirely by white men in similar power suits, creating an environment where anything different stood out, and was effectively overlooked. Her pink yarn appearance and different demeanor made her invisible to colleagues who were accustomed to uniformity.

  • workplace diversity
  • isolation
  • team culture
Q3

Why did Purl invite Lacy to join drinks after being ignored?

Purl invited Lacy because she recognized the same sense of invisibility she had experienced. When Lacy arrived as a new yellow yarn ball and was ignored by the team, Purl saw an opportunity to help someone who felt excluded as she once did. This act marked a turning point, as Purl shifted from merely trying to fit in to actively creating inclusion for others.

Foreshadowing: Purl's own earlier experience of being left behind during lunch directly connects to her empathy for Lacy.

Q4

Why did Purl return to her original pink color?

After befriending Lacy and experiencing the positive impact of including others, she understood that changing herself to fit in was unnecessary. Her return to her natural pink self coincided with the office becoming more diverse, showing that being herself earned her acceptance more genuinely than mimicking others.

Q5

How did B.R.O. Capital become more diverse?

B.R.O. Capital became more diverse through Purl's actions and the arrival of new employees like Lacy. What motivated Purl to want acceptance at B.R.O. Capital?

Purl was motivated by the basic human need to belong. As an entry-level employee excited about her new job, she wanted to be recognized and valued by her colleagues. Q7

What changed the workplace culture at B.R.O. Capital?

The workplace culture changed when Purl chose authenticity over conformity and actively included someone different from the norm. This inspired others to be more aware of inclusion, shifting the office from a homogeneous environment to a collaborative one where different backgrounds were valued.

Q8

Why did Purl feel invisible at her new job?
