Lynn Schaffer, a loving mother and wife, gets unexpectedly arrested for a crime she was unaware she had committed. She initially takes her arrest lightly, believing in her innocence and expecting to resolve the situation quickly. Despite her lawyer's advice to accept a plea bargain, Lynn opts to go to trial. Her decision surprises those around her, believing she can prove her innocence. The trial results in her conviction, and she is sentenced to the maximum of 10 years in prison.

Lynn is transferred to a women's prison to serve her sentence, leaving behind her family. She faces immediate difficulties adjusting to the lack of privacy and encounters inmates involved in drug abuse and prostitution. Her first days reveal the harsh realities of incarceration.

Soon, Lynn uncovers that the prison is corrupt, with guards engaging in sexual abuse of inmates. Sergeant Ed Crang and other staff members exploit their positions, creating a dangerous environment for the prisoners. Lynn is determined to stand against this injustice.

Lynn considers the advice of her husband Larry to stay out of trouble and focus on her upcoming probation. She initially refrains from intervening in the abuses, believing her focus should be on her own potential release. However, her perspective begins to change as the corruption worsens.

When Frannie, one of her few friends inside, becomes the third victim of sexual assault, Lynn recognizes that no one is truly safe. This tragic event prompts her to take action against the ongoing abuses. She decides she cannot silence herself any longer.

With her husband's help, who operates a radio station, Lynn starts exposing the prison's corruption to the media. She aims to garner public attention and pressure to change the abusive system. Her efforts mark a turning point in her fight for justice.

Sergeant Ed Crang becomes aware of Lynn's attempts to expose the truth and begins to watch her closely. He prevents her from receiving visits from her husband and physically assaults her to silence her. The corruption and brutality escalate with his interference.

Lynn seeks support from fellow inmates to collect proof of the crimes within the prison. At first, many are afraid to help due to threats from guards and inmates like Angie, who profits from the system. Nonetheless, she persists in her efforts to find concrete evidence.

A sympathetic female guard named Sheila provides Lynn with a file containing evidence of the prison’s abuse and corruption. This material becomes key to her attempt to bring justice and finally expose those responsible.

A senator visits the prison to investigate the rape accusations. Crang and Angie try to prevent Lynn from delivering the incriminating materials, but with help from other inmates and Sheila, she manages to reach the senator. Her courageous act sparks action.

Following the exposure, over 20 guards are fired and replaced by female personnel, signaling a significant overhaul of the prison's corrupt system. Lynn's efforts contribute to bringing justice and initiating reforms to protect inmates.

Lynn is eventually granted leniency and allowed to serve the remainder of her sentence under house arrest. Her courageous fight against corruption inside the prison results in her gaining a less harsh form of punishment and a chance to rebuild her life.
