This volatile behavior strains his family as they navigate a dowry‑driven society, where securing a suitable marriage for Steffi becomes a pressing, fragile dream. The household’s attempts to keep Steffi out of trouble clash with Bruno’s reputation, and the town’s social norms push them toward a precarious future.

The plot thickens as Steffi’s mother pushes for a match with Mariano Sajin Gopu, a prawn farmer from the island of Thalavettichira. The wedding would be a financial lifeline, but Mariano’s family insists on a hefty dowry: 25 sovereigns of gold. With Bruno’s behavior having alienated potential goodwill and with no savings to fall back on, the family’s chances look bleak. The church refuses to intervene, and Bruno is expelled from his political circle, leaving the family with few options beyond a desperate alliance. Desperation pushes them toward a shadowy fixer, PP Ajesh Basil Joseph, who acts as a middleman for a jewelry syndicate that supplies wedding gold in exchange for cash gifts received at the ceremony. The arrangement promises a wedding, but it comes with a heavy caveat: if the cash falls short, any remaining gold must be returned immediately.

On the wedding night, Ajesh collects the cash gifts but discovers there is only enough to cover 13 sovereigns—well short of the demanded 25. With 12 sovereigns still unpaid, Ajesh demands the return of the gold. Steffi’s mother stalls for time, and as Ajesh dozes, Mariano abducts Steffi and takes the gold with him. When Ajesh awakens, he realizes he has been deceived. Bruno, now indifferent to the consequences, warns that Mariano is ruthless and that his island is a dangerous place. The burden of injustice presses hard on Ajesh, who resolves to retrieve what is owed and to protect Steffi from a future of coercive arrangements.

As the island’s grand church feast approaches, Mariano forces Steffi to wear part of the gold while the rest sits in his pocket. From the prawn farm, Ajesh orchestrates a plan—he calls Mariano and threatens to flood the open water with prawns, destroying Mariano’s livelihood. The fear of losing everything propels a frantic pursuit, leading to a final, brutal clash. In the scuffle, Ajesh traps Mariano’s hand in heavy machinery and secures exactly 12 sovereigns of gold—the amount he was owed.

Before leaving, Steffi awaits at the church, torn between a life she does not want and the freedom she longs for. She finally confesses she cannot return to Mariano’s abusive house, and Ajesh offers her a way out. As they sail away together, a defining moment of clarity emerges: You don’t need gold. You are valuable even without it. The two set course for a future free from the weight of past debts, choosing a life built on autonomy and mutual support rather than on a calculated exchange of money for marriage.
