Liz Chambers, Jaimie Alexander, finds herself stranded in the quiet town of Hope, and soon learns that her arrival was foretold a century earlier by the town’s founding preacher, Nick Chinlund as Jonas Hathaway, marking her as a pivotal piece in a terrifying rebirth that could reshape the town forever. Forced to seek shelter for the night, she meets Hudson Leick as Sarah Austin, a relentless reporter for a tabloid who has traveled to investigate legends of living scarecrows and the dark history that haunts Hope. The town’s past reveals a brutal ritual: residents once nailed outsiders to crosses in the cornfields, a barbaric sacrifice that a young girl from nearby Liberty reportedly warned about. In a startling turn of events, Liberty’s people crucified the local preacher who spearheaded those sacrifices, convinced that Hathaway’s spirit would someday return to reclaim what was taken. The legend hints at a rebirth that could awaken with Liz at its center.

Sarcastic curiosity gives way to dangerous curiosity as Sarah convinces Liz to accompany her to the cornfield. There, the two construct a scarecrow and mount it on a cross, hoping to grab a sensational photograph for the front page. But their experiment takes a deadly turn when the scarecrow literally comes to life. The stalking figure attacks Sarah and closes in on Liz, who manages to escape into the squad car of a deputy—only for the deputy to be killed upon arriving at the scene.

Liz races to the sheriff’s office and begins to recount the nightmare, but radios crackle and phones fail, leaving her in a perilous silence. The deputy who tried to help soon departs to check on a looming problem, and Liz is left alone to fend off the encroaching scarecrow as it closes in. She fights for her life, even as the engine of her car is found to be missing, stripping her of a quick exit. Desperate, she seeks sanctuary with the town’s preacher, Ethan Phillips, only to uncover a shocking truth: the preacher is the leader of the town’s secret worship of Hathaway’s spirit, intent on resurrecting the rebirth by fathering a child with Liz so that the spirit can possess the infant. The moment the preacher tries to carry out the plan, the sheriff—Brian McNamara—arrives to intervene, but a car crash leaves him unconscious before he can stop the ceremony. Liz’s attempt to escape is met with another brutal lie as the preacher assaults her; she fights back and breaks free, narrowly avoiding capture.

On the run, Liz encounters Sabrina, a young girl hiding in an underground shelter whose parents were slain by the scarecrow, yet who somehow survived the fall of Hope’s terrible tale. Sabrina’s courage and vulnerability push Liz to protect her at all costs. The two form an uneasy alliance as Liz leads Sabrina through back alleys and cornfields in search of safety, a plan that takes them back toward the town and back into danger. Liz returns to confirm Sabrina’s safety and finds the sheriff, who has somehow escaped danger, now to be a frightened ally. Together they return to Hope, where Liz and Sabrina are forced to confront the possibility that Sabrina herself could be the key to ending Hathaway’s cycle, especially since Liz is not deemed pure in the eyes of the ritual.

The preacher’s dark pursuit intensifies as he hunts for Sabrina, forcing Liz and Sabrina to hide and improvise. Sabrina manages to slip into the farmhouse and set it ablaze, a desperate act that buys Liz time to rally the town to confront the terrifying reality they’ve created. In a brutal climax, the townspeople burn the body of the preacher, performing their own dark ritual to end the threat and to fulfill a prophecy they barely understand. Yet the danger isn’t over: Hathaway’s spirit appears to possess Sabrina’s father, who is found hanging on a cross in the cornfield, his vines reaching out as a haunting reminder of the living terror that remains. Liz becomes entangled in the spectral vines as the possessed figure pleads with Sabrina, and a murky omen of crows appears overhead, a sign of dark fortune turning sour.

The swarm of crows proves to be the turning point: they descend upon the townspeople, attacking both the living and the possessed, including Sabrina’s father, shattering the illusion of safety and giving Liz a path to escape. With the nightmare still looming, Liz and Sabrina seize a chance and flee, hitching a ride with a passing truck driver who seems kind enough to help. As they drive away, a haunting radio song crackles to life, a reminder of the nightmare they endured in Hope. Liz switches it off, determined to leave the town behind, and they press onward into an uncertain future, slowly driving away from the burning remnants of Hope and toward a daylight horizon that promises they will never return to the same quiet town again.
