Winnie is the Marble family’s daughter who grows into a social climber, captivated by wealth and society’s appearances. William is a London bank clerk whose mounting debt drives him toward desperate, criminal choices. He murders his nephew for money, then tries to cover the crime as his wealth grows. Annie is the loyal wife who senses something is wrong but tries to maintain the family’s stability. Marguerite Collins is the shopowner who befriends Marble to secure money, then uses the affair as leverage to extract more funds. She embodies a calculating, opportunistic form of temptation that accelerates Marble’s ruin. Her actions add a blunt, social-psychological layer to the crime’s motive.
