An inept Ramesh struggles with eviction as a tenant because he repeatedly fails to pay his rent. To dodge homelessness, he adopts the disguise of an elderly man and gains entry into a house as a tenant, where he soon falls for the landlord’s daughter, Shanti. This budding affection unfolds in a world where love collides with secrecy and social expectations. Shanti’s best friend, Chanchal, has married a famous barrister, Dayal, for money and status, and she becomes Shanti’s neighbor after the marriage. The arrangement sets up a tense triangle, as Chanchal’s discontent with her own marriage spills over into jealousy of Shanti and Ramesh’s growing bond.

As the pressure mounts, Shanti’s father faces pressure from Prakash, the rake and rough husband of Shanti’s elder sister. Prakash threatens to demand money, and in a heated confrontation, he pushes the frail father, who soon succumbs to the injuries. This tragedy casts a long shadow over the family, while Shanti’s elder sister falls ill. In a bid to help, Shanti gives her brother-in-law the gold bangles her family cannot spare for medicine, but Prakash squanders the money on liquor instead. With no steady income, Ramesh’s prospects look bleaker than ever, and Chanchal suggests that Shanti take up work to support themselves. Shanti finds employment in a theatre, a decision that deepens the intertwining paths of the characters.

Meanwhile, Chanchal tries to entangle Ramesh with her own schemes, arranging for him to work under her husband. Prakash, driven by the need for money, teams up with Chanchal to drive a wedge between Ramesh and Shanti, setting in motion a chain of manipulations. At a party, Ramesh is drugged into a compromised state by Chanchal, and Dayal, upon discovering the two in his home, rewrites his Will to disown Chanchal. The scheming Prakash uses this opportunity to steal the Will, tightening his hold over the unfolding drama. Dayal’s anger turns toward Chanchal, and she convinces him to take a break at a lakeside resort, seemingly easing the tension but only momentarily.

Chanchal’s machinations continue as she seeks Dayal’s removal, and she orchestrates Dayal’s murder by drowning him in the lake. With the Will now in the hands of Prakash, the blackmailer pinpoints Chanchal as the culprit in Dayal’s death, forcing her into a web of danger. Shanti, meanwhile, glimpses shadows of someone strangling Chanchal, a clue that pulls her into the center of the affair. She travels to Chanchal’s bungalow, where she finds Prakash roughing up Chanchal. In a moment of desperate courage, Shanti disarms Prakash and threatens to shoot him. A shot rings out, and Prakash is killed.

The trial that follows tests the town’s legal minds, and none of the top lawyers are willing to defend Shanti. With the odds stacked against her, Ramesh takes on her case to defend the woman he loves. Throughout the courtroom drama, the truth about jealousy, loyalty, and the price of desire comes to light, challenging everyone’s notions of justice and loyalty. Will the love between Ramesh and Shanti survive the gauntlet of social pressure and legal peril, or will the weight of the evidence and the twists of fate push her toward the gallows?
