In the 1860s, Italian soldier Giorgio (Giraudeau) is posted to a remote outpost, away from his lover Clara (Antonelli). He lodges in Colonel’s (Girotti) house, befriending the colonel and the local doctor (Trintignant). The home also shelters Fosca (d’Obici), a plain, unstable woman whose obsessive love for Giorgio threatens to overwhelm him.
