Vera Ivanovna, Irina Kupchenko, a solitary schoolteacher, forms a fragile bond with her 16-year-old student, Zina Begunkova, Svetlana Smirnova, a girl shaped by a harsh home life and an absent father. Vera’s quiet life—often punctuated by dates with a painter named Igor, Sergey Kovalenkov—is suddenly tested when Zina’s impulsive, headstrong nature collides with the boundaries Vera tries to set. The story follows how their relationship shifts from mentorship toward something far more fraught and potentially dangerous.

Zina’s bold, unsettled spirit drives a sequence of troubling choices. After confessing interest in a mature man, Zhenya Pryakhin, Oleg Yankovskiy, who rejects her with a harsh rebuke that ends with him shoving her into a river, Zina returns to Vera in a state of distress, soaking wet at the teacher’s window. Vera takes her in with the best intentions, hoping that personal guidance and empathy might temper the girl’s volatility. Yet the lack of clear boundaries soon becomes a critical fault in their alliance, allowing Zina to seize a growing control over Vera’s life. Her power expands when she secretly reads Vera’s private letters with Igor and goes further by rewriting one of the missives, rearranging the names so it appears to be a note from Pryakhin directed to herself.

The trouble deepens when Zina shares the altered letter with a school friend, only for it to be read aloud in class. The discovery of Zina’s handwriting leads classmates and teachers to mock her, turning the atmosphere at school into a chorus of cruelty rather than the innocent mischief she hoped to find. Vera, meanwhile, is shaken by the realization that her students are capable of outright cruelty and a troubling lack of empathy. Zina, for her part, feels betrayed when others believe the truth of her deception less than their disbelief in her intentions.

Despite the escalating tension, Vera chooses to forgive the invasion of privacy, attempting to salvage their relationship and insisting on staying by Zina’s side. This act of forgiveness unintentionally reinforces Zina’s sense of power over her teacher, feeding a dangerous dynamic. The conflict comes to a head when Zina tries to lock Vera inside the apartment to keep her from going out with a late-date partner. Unable to reason with the girl, Vera responds with a slap, a decisive moment that underscores the fragile balance between control and care.

In the film’s final moments, Zina steps into a leadership role of sorts, directing her classmates during a school cleanup as the teacher is absent. The scene hints at a future that remains unresolved, leaving the audience to consider what lies ahead for Vera Ivanovna and the delicate, ultimately precarious relationship at the story’s core. The ending is deliberately open, inviting reflection on how power, trust, and forgiveness shape the paths of both teacher and student.
