This film begins with what appears to be a dream sequence set in a forest engulfed by a wildfire. Suddenly, a bear, ablaze, runs past the camera, leading us to the home of Eric Marsh, the superintendent of a local wildfire crew based in Prescott, Arizona. As he prepares his gear following a call to tackle a wildfire near Phoenix, his wife Amanda is in the kitchen, reminding him about a disagreement they had the previous evening. He offers a heartfelt apology before heading out to face the flames.
Eric leads a second-tier crew known as the “Deucers,” which means they are not permitted on the front lines of wildfires. The crew is depicted working hard to create firebreaks by digging lines and clearing combustible vegetation to protect areas from the approaching blaze. During this time, they encounter a “Hotshot” crew, to whom Eric offers tactical advice, only to be dismissed with the retort to “do what Deucers do best, which is nothing.” Their negligence leads to devastating flames engulfing the small town they intended to protect.
In search of support, Eric contacts his friend Duane, a former fire chief, in hopes of gaining certification as a Hotshot crew. They aspire to be the first municipal hotshot crew in the United States, while Eric’s history is explored as he reflects on his life and challenges. Here, we meet Brendan “Donut” McDonough, who is introduced under less-than-ideal circumstances, indulging in substances with friends. After discovering that an ex-girlfriend is pregnant, Brendan seeks to turn his life around but faces a series of setbacks, including arrests and family disapproval.
Despite his rough past, Brendan applies to join Eric’s crew, where Eric, recognizing his potential, decides to give him a chance despite warnings from others about Brendan’s character. As Brendan struggles but ultimately perseveres, he finds camaraderie in the crew and learns the ropes in the challenging environment of wildfire management. Eric’s dedication as a leader grows as he aims to transform his crew into a respected Hotshot team.
With their determination, they receive approval to operate as a Hotshot crew and adopt the name Granite Mountain Hotshots. The film progresses through intense firefighting scenes intercut with Brendan’s attempts to connect with his daughter. However, Eric faces personal turmoil as a tragic accident involving Amanda brings their relationship under scrutiny, illustrating their shared history of addiction and the stakes involved in their demanding lives.
Their bond is put to a test as Eric makes decisions impacting both his crew and his family life. He resolves to devote more time to Amanda but is soon thrust into a life-threatening situation during a significant wildfire at Yarnell. As the crew battles mounting flames, Brendan plays a critical role but soon finds himself in grave danger. The tension escalates as circumstances spiral out of control, forcing the team to employ desperate measures to survive the impending blaze.
As the smoke rises, Brendan hears the heartbreaking news that the 19 members of his crew are lost to the fire. The aftermath brings devastation to their families, particularly Amanda, who, like many others, is left grappling with the profound loss.
The film concludes as families, united in grief, await news of their loved ones. After one survivor walks in, a wave of sorrow and empathy washes over the families in the gym. The credits roll over the faces of the fallen heroes, paying tribute to the largest loss of firefighter life in the U.S. since 9/11, leaving a lasting impact that reverberates throughout the community and beyond.
