Yamuna comes from a very poor family, where hardship is a daily companion. She shares a cramped life with her teenage son Lakshman and a husband whose open affair drains her earnings and jewelry, leaving her to bear the social shame that follows. After a painful public humiliation, she makes the difficult move to Mumbai, where she stays with her aunt Akke, who is also struggling and lives in a single room with her own husband. Akke rises as Yamuna’s primary support, and the two women gradually begin to stitch together a semblance of normalcy.

To escape the fear of becoming a burden, Yamuna spends her days hunting for work. One day she follows Akke to the Sir J. J. School of Art and discovers that Akke works as a nude model for the art students. A tense moment erupts over the nature of the work, but Akke reassures Yamuna that what she does is a noble form of education. After some reflection, Yamuna agrees to try it herself. They head to the college, and Yamuna steps into the role of a nude model, a decision that opens a precarious path. She also takes on housekeeping chores to supplement her income. Among the students, only one woman seems to truly notice her, while many others remain oblivious to her presence.

For Yamuna, the money she earns through modeling becomes a lifeline that funds her son’s education, even as the weight of their fragile arrangement grows heavier. She begins to see signs that Lakshman’s interests may be turning toward the arts as well—their quiet secret becomes harder to protect as paintings start appearing in his school bag. Worried about the possibility of him following in their footsteps, Akke and Yamuna decide that it would be safer for Lakshman to study far from Mumbai, sending him to relatives in Aurangabad. Lakshman resists, insisting that Mumbai offers the best opportunities. Yet he is pulled away, leaving Mumbai behind and sharpening the ache of their separation.

Life presses on, and Lakshman’s demands for money become more persistent. Yamuna, though reluctant, takes on private assignments to cover his education and keep their precarious stability afloat. The trust she has built with a few people at the college is tested, especially as a single student continues to accompany her when she needs to pose nude away from the secured campus.

A pivotal moment arrives when a famous artist visits Mumbai and requests Yamuna to pose for him. The session becomes part of a broader controversy about nude art, and protests erupt around the college, leading to the destruction of some nude paintings. In the face of fear, Yamuna resumes her work, showing a quiet resolve that her livelihood—and her son’s future—depends on her artistry.

As Akke’s health falters, their fragile arrangement becomes unsustainable. Akke experiences joint pains that render her unable to continue, and an exhausting strain settles over their small household. When Lakshman returns home, the pressures of poverty and the stigma he associates with his mother’s work boil over. He accuses Yamuna of prostitution and declares that he will abandon his education to seek a different life abroad. The weight of guilt and fear, coupled with the sense that their dreams might die in poverty, drives Yamuna to a desperate decision: she ends her life.

The aftermath unfolds with a new revelation. Lakshman attends an exhibition of nude paintings at the same college and, moved by raw emotion and curiosity, approaches the art with a troubling impulse. He confronts the reality of his mother’s image in a painting and reacts with anger, an act that underscores the enduring turmoil surrounding a family caught between art, poverty, and dignity.
