Nick Beam [Tim Robbins], a successful advertising executive, believes his life is perfectly in order until he returns home and suspects his wife Ann Beam [Kelly Preston] is involved with another man. A pair of cufflinks belonging to his boss, Phillip “P.B.” Barrow [Michael McKean], surface as a damning clue, driving Nick to the edge of a nervous breakdown. In a reckless plunge of fear and rage, he speeds through the city and is suddenly intercepted by Terrence Paul “T-Paul” Davidson [Martin Lawrence], a carjacker who immediately tries to take control of the situation. Nick manages to turn the tables, kidnapping T-Paul and driving him to a diner out in the Arizona desert. What begins as a dangerous confrontation quickly shifts into an unlikely partnership: Nick knows the inside layout and the safe combination at Philip’s office, while T-Paul brings street-smarts and firsthand know-how of dodging cameras and alarms. Their plan collides with the arrival of another pair of criminals, Davis “Rig” Lanlow [John C. McGinley] and Charles “Charlie” Dunt [Giancarlo Esposito], who soon get blamed for the gas station robbery that sparks the larger scheme. When Rig and Charlie catch up with Nick and T-Paul, a tense standoff erupts: the would-be thieves are forced to improvise, Nick is wounded in the arm during the scuffle, and the two teams race back toward Los Angeles with loyalties and motives quickly shifting beneath them. At T-Paul’s apartment, Nick takes a moment to regroup while his reluctant partner reveals more about his own life—his electrical engineering certification and a stack of rejection letters from prospective employers—hinting at why he clings to the possibility of a better future for his own family. Back home, Nick reaches out to Ann to confront the truth of what he saw.
