Shortly after the Columbine High School massacre, Union Intermediate High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma becomes one of many schools nationwide that tighten security measures in an effort to prevent another tragedy.

Brandi Blackbear writes Stephen King–inspired horror stories and dresses in a goth style, a combination that sets her apart from her peers. Her defiance catches the attention of many at school, and the atmosphere around her thickens with suspicion. As she continues to explore dark themes for inspiration—often checking out a world religions book that includes Wicca—rumors begin to swirl. Fellow students interpret her curiosity as a threat, labeling her a witch and accusing her of casting a spell that sickens a teacher. The fear surrounding Brandi spreads quickly, and she is suspended again.

Her family’s fight becomes a public one. The Blackbears seek help from the American Civil Liberties Union, which argues that Brandi’s civil rights have been violated by the school. The ACLU launches a lawsuit seeking $10 million, asserting that the school’s actions against Brandi amount to mistreatment that cannot be dismissed as mere discipline. The Blackbears aren’t certain they deserve that much, but they believe a strong case is necessary to force recognition of the school’s overreach and to make Brandi’s story heard in court. The judge ultimately dismisses the charges rather than move toward a trial and orders the Blackbears to pay about $6,000 in court fees. They cannot afford that amount, and the proceedings threaten to erode the family’s resolve. Eventually, a compromise emerges: the fees can be dropped if the Blackbears drop their appeal, allowing them to walk away from the courtroom with their message intact, if not the full vindication they sought.

Earlier in the same school year, tensions flare in another moment that underscores Brandi’s isolation. Kimberly, the most popular girl in the school and Brandi’s chief tormentor, tries to interview Brandi for the school newspaper, but Brandi declines to participate. The moment highlights a turning point in the school’s social dynamics: after Brandi’s stand, a wave of admiration for her sweeps through many students, and Kimberly’s standing among her peers begins to fade.
