Read the complete plot breakdown of City Lights (2014), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

Deepak Singh, Rajkummar Rao is a former Indian Army driver who runs a small garment shop in a dusty village in Rajasthan, where life unfolds through poverty, a flicker of hope, and lingering despair. He shares this burden with his wife Rakhi, Patralekhaa, and their young daughter Mahi, who accompany him as they set off for Mumbai in search of a fresh start after mounting debts threaten to swallow them whole.

In Mumbai, with almost no reliable contacts—save for a lone friend named Omkar—Deepak is pulled into a trap that changes everything. Two conmen promise to sell him a flat for a mere Rs 10,000 and vanish with his money. When he tries to report it, the police refuse to file an FIR, leaving him to cope with the loss and the fragile thread of a plan to rebuild.

Back home, Rakhi finds herself adrift. An escort working at a nightclub offers temporary shelter and persuades her to take up work as a bar dancer while Deepak searches for a steady job, adding further strain to an already precarious family dynamic.

Deepak eventually takes a job as a driver for a privately owned security bureau, earning about Rs 15,000 per month. His blunt, perceptive senior colleague, Vishnu, Manav Kaul, quickly notices Deepak’s gullibility and uses small favors to win his trust. The two become entangled in a plan to loot a parcel being transported by the agency. When Deepak objects to the theft, Vishnu resorts to blackmail, hinting that he has hidden a box he once stole in Deepak’s own home.

Cornered, Deepak agrees to the risky scheme to steal the keys to the box. The plan unravels when Vishnu is attacked and killed during the robbery. Meanwhile, Rakhi loses her job, and the family’s prospects look bleaker than ever. Determined to protect Rakhi and Mahi, Deepak hatches a cunning way to pass on the imprint of the key for the stolen box, hoping to secure their escape from Mumbai.

The finale arrives at a steep cost: Deepak’s life is sacrificed in the act of attempting to steal the keys, but his final move allows Rakhi to safeguard their future and carry forward a memory of the life they once shared. Rakhi and Mahi return to their village, with Rakhi holding onto the memory of Deepak and the happier days they cherished, a testament to resilience, sacrifice, and the quiet bravery that kept them going.
