Ellen Jessman returns from a skiing vacation and Steve Keiver is at the airport to pick her up in his pal Harry's taxi. Keiver reveals he hopes to marry Ellen, but as an insurance investigator he worries about money and social prospects. The encounter sets Keiver's motive against the backdrop of their fraught relationship.

Keiver's boss, Manston, cannot grant a raise but casually mentions that recovering stolen furs would be worth $10,000, which would absolve the insurer. Keiver sees an opportunity in a risky deal with criminals that could boost his career and finances. The seed of his illegal enterprise is planted.

Keiver bravely but recklessly approaches known mobsters to propose his plan. He is roughed up during the confrontation, but the deal is sealed when his boss rewards him with a $2,500 bonus. The exchange plunges him deeper into criminal shortcuts.

When Keiver returns to Ellen with a diamond ring, he learns she has left town and has married a wealthy man while on vacation. The shock ends any immediate hope of reconciliation. The personal loss fuels his later willingness to navigate criminal schemes.

A bitter Keiver decides to keep dealing with criminals for returned merchandise and makes a lot of money. He begins dating his colleague Joan Brenson, who is attracted to him, but he still harbors lingering feelings for Ellen. The double life pulls him between affection and ambition.

When Ellen returns to town, Keiver tries to win her back now that he's rich. He uses his newfound wealth to court Ellen, hoping status will compensate for the past. The pursuit highlights the film's tension between love and opportunistic crime.

The police resent Keiver's casual involvement in borderline illegal actions. Inspector Duggan assigns his man O'Bannion to the case, signaling a tightening legal watch over his schemes. Keiver's operations become a matter of public concern.

Ellen and Joan end up together in a large women's lounge at intermission of a Broadway show. Two women rob all the ladies of their jewelry and flee. Outside the theater, they remove their wigs and reveal themselves to be men.

Joan, broken-hearted that Keiver has returned to Ellen, brings him a message from Harry about retrieving the stolen gems. The message hints at danger and betrayal as the trio's plans collide.

Franko, a pool-loving mobster, has the jewels and double-crosses Keiver. Keiver is knocked out and the jewels are taken. Keiver suspects either Joan or Harry of betraying him, but the truth is more complex.

It turns out Ellen has the jewels and is after the money herself, along with husband Gordon. Franko tortures Ellen to learn the location of the gems. The tension between loyalty and greed escalates as the web tightens.

Franko murders both Ellen and Gordon and ends up underwater with Keiver in a fight to the death. Keiver is an imperfect but resilient survivor as the struggle reaches its climax.

Franko surfaces to find Duggan and armed cops waiting on the pool's surface. Keiver is pulled from the water and survives the deadly encounter. Joan remains loyal, still in love with him.

With Ellen dead and Keiver surviving, Joan's devotion remains strong. The film ends on an unsettled note, hinting at possible future connections between the surviving characters.
