Private detective Humphrey Campbell tracks down a runaway woman named Louise and the two quickly marry. Their impulsive union pulls him deeper into her world and into a risky partnership. The marriage sets up the following pursuit as they travel together toward Reno.

While en route to Reno for their honeymoon, a bank is robbed by three men. The event creates a tense distraction and hints at a larger criminal world around the couple. It foreshadows the danger that will pursue them.

Oscar Flack from the Flack Missing Persons Bureau locates the newlyweds in Reno and pushes Humphrey to take a case. He wants Humphrey to find Hal Benedict, offering a fur coat as incentive for Louise to locate him. Humphrey initially balks at FBI involvement but is persuaded to pursue the case.

The couple visits Warren Benedict, Hal's father, to learn about Hal's whereabouts. The case hints at wider stakes, including potential FBI interest. This meeting confirms the Benedict family connection behind Hal's disappearance.

Although FBI involvement raises doubts, Humphrey agrees to take the case after Oscar secures the promise of Hal's letters and a payoff. Louise's incentive tied to Hal adds pressure to solve the mystery. He resolves to protect her even as the investigation deepens.

In the hotel bar, Humphrey learns Hal was often seen with Irene Donovan, a redhead. A blonde named Gypsy Toland offers him a ride to Irene's place, but Louise spots Humphrey and he exits the car to avoid a scene. The tangled relationships hint at potential motives and suspects.

Humphrey later discovers Irene is dead and finds Rose Madden alive, insisting she didn't kill Irene. They flee in Rose's car after a tense confrontation, while Louise spots Humphrey with Rose and becomes furious. The police seize Louise because her husband is now a murder suspect.

Humphrey visits Clyde Copley, who admits he was hired to retrieve Hal's letters to Irene. Irene had threatened to use the letters if Hal married Rose. Copley’s involvement clears Humphrey of the murder due to a solid alibi.

Three men attack Humphrey and Louise as they drive toward Benedict's ranch; a gunfight ensues and Humphrey wounds two attackers. He identifies a silver dollar in Irene's hand as Red Harris's trademark, revealing the bank robber's involvement. This leads Benedict to reveal a ransom note for Hal.

Benedict shows Humphrey the ransom note demanding $50,000 for Hal's return and assigns Harry Belding to drop the money. Humphrey tells Benedict to go ahead with the plan, coordinating with police as needed. The case tightens around the ransom scheme.

Two FBI agents confront Humphrey over the bank robber lookalike, but Oscar vouches for him. Shortly afterward, Belding is murdered and robbed while delivering the ransom money, complicating the investigation. The tension escalates as the real killer remains hidden among the suspect group.

Gypsy lures Humphrey into an apparent kidnapping, revealing Red Harris's desire to punish the Stafford lookalike. Red demands identification of the killer, but Louise volunteers as hostage to buy time. The plan twists further as the truth inches closer.

Humphrey gathers everyone in Clyde Copley's office. Red Harris fails to identify a killer he knows and is killed in a shootout with the FBI after an anonymous tip. The film reveals that the killer is actually Clyde Copley, ending the manhunt and resolving the case. Louise's loyalty and Humphrey's deductive skills close the whirlwind investigation.
