Read the complete plot breakdown of Nightmare in Badham County (1976), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

On a sunlit cross-country summer trip, two UCLA students, Cathy Phillips and Diane Emery, find themselves stranded in a rural Southern town after a flat tire. A local resident helps them put on the spare, but they quickly run into friction with the town’s sheriff, Slim Danen, whose cold, standoffish attitude casts a shadow over their stop. The women press on, getting their car fixed at a diner and a workshop, where they learn their fuel pump needs replacing. Opting to leave the car overnight, they sleep in the woods, hoping for a quick fix. Yet in the middle of the night, Danen returns, arrests them for trespassing, and ferries them off to the county jail.

That night, the pressure of confinement erupts into violence as Danen sexually assaults Diane while Cathy is forced to witness the horror from a separate cell. The next day, during a hearing, a corrupt local judge—Judge—tells Cathy and Diane that they owe a hefty sum for the car repairs, a demand they contest. Diane gathers the courage in that room to name the assault, telling the judge that Danen raped her. The verdict lands them in Badham County Farm, a harsh working prison farm where they will serve a 30-day sentence under the watch of Superintendent Dancer and three female guards: Dulcie, Smitty, and the only one who provokes real fear, Greer.

Inside the farm, Cathy is horrified to discover a harsh, racially segregated system. Her quarters are white-only, while Diane ends up in an all-black ward, and the inmates are subjected to humiliations, verbal abuse, and rough treatment at the hands of the guards. Sara, a longtime inmate, takes Diane under her wing, offering a glimmer of mentorship amid the brutality. Cathy’s sense of solidarity with other prisoners deepens when a fight while working in the fields leads to an extension of her own sentence.

One by one, the residents of the camp become witnesses to the system’s cruelty. Cathy is allowed to serve drinks and attend a high-society party hosted by local residents, under the watch of Dancer and the guards, a moment that crystallizes the chasm between the town’s polite appearances and the violence behind its doors. Cathy pleads for help from several partygoers, but their indifference is palpable. Dulcie warns Cathy after she catches a failed escape attempt, but the warning is almost a lullaby compared to the reality of life inside.

As negotiations with the outside world stall, Cathy and Diane hatch a plan to escape. They intend to reclaim Cathy’s car from town, using a spare key hidden beneath the bumper. Diane distracts Danen by speeding the car, enabling Cathy to call her parents from a phone booth and seek aid. The plan succeeds in getting Cathy a connection to her family, but Diane vanishes in the chaos that follows.

When Cathy’s father arrives the next day to bring her home, she demands that Diane be freed or accounted for, only to find the authorities unhelpful and evasive. After Cathy is finally released from the farm, she runs toward the fields with her father, hoping to locate Diane through their shared memories of the road trip. They reunite with Sara, the ally who has been a steady presence in Cathy’s mind since the farm’s darker days. In that tense moment, Greer appears, threatening Sara with a leather strap, a moment that tests the fragile line between control and resistance.

Sara stands firm against the brutality, and when Greer lunges, Sara responds with a struggle that ends in Greer’s death. The fallout is abrupt and devastating: Sara tearfully informs Cathy that she has witnessed the workers burying Diane’s body in an unmarked grave, tucked away among others who attempted to escape. The revelation lands with crushing finality, underscoring the film’s stark commentary on abuse, power, and the erasure of prison voices.

This story unfolds with a relentless, unflinching gaze at the price of cruelty in a place where the law’s veneer often hides the mechanics of control. The atmosphere is saturated with tension, as characters navigate moral gray areas, betrayals, and the stubborn hope that someone will listen. The echoes of Cathy and Diane’s ordeal linger long after the last grave is marked, inviting viewers to reflect on who gets protected by the system and at what cost to those who are voiceless.
