Night and the City

Fabian attempts a con at a wrestling match but instead witnesses Gregorius arguing with Kristo, who effectively controls London wrestling. This encounter sparks Fabian's interest in the sport as a route to wealth. He befriends Gregorius and Nikolas, seeing a chance to stage a London wrestling venture that Kristo cannot easily block.

Fabian approaches Phil Nosseross and his wife Helen with a plan to back a new wrestling venture in London. Nosseross is incredulous, but at Helen's instigation he offers to provide £200 if Fabian can match it. Fabian then begs money from Figler, Googin, and Anna, but none are willing to help him, underscoring the precariousness of his plan.

Meanwhile, Kristo's cronies warn Nosseross to keep Fabian away from London's wrestling scene, and Nosseross remains tight-lipped. Fabian presses on and opens his own gym with Gregorius and Nikolas as the stars, with Nosseross as a silent partner.

Helen offers £200 in exchange for getting a license to run her own nightclub, claiming the funds came from selling an expensive fur coat. Fabian agrees but secretly engineers the license as a forgery with Googin.

Kristo's associates warn Nosseross to keep Fabian away from the wrestling scene, and Nosseross remains guarded. Fabian presses on and opens his own gym with Gregorius and Nikolas as stars, while Nosseross acts as a silent partner.

Kristo visits the gym and, learning of Nosseross's backing, plots to kill Fabian; however, they decide that Gregorius must leave Fabian first. Nosseross withdraws his support, and Kristo proposes keeping the venture alive by pairing Nikolas against The Strangler.

Fabian corners The Strangler's manager, Mickey Beer, into backing the fight and visits Nosseross for the needed £200. Instead, Nosseross telephones Kristo, tipping him off that The Strangler is in Fabian's gym.

Desperate, Fabian steals the money he needs from Mary Bristol and hurries back to the gym. The Strangler goads Gregorius into a brutal, protracted bout, during which Nikolas suffers a wrist injury.

Gregorius defeats The Strangler, but Kristo arrives and Gregorius dies moments later in Kristo's arms from exhaustion. Fabian, seeing his plans collapse, flees the scene.

In vengeance, Kristo places a £1,000 bounty on Fabian and mobilizes London's underworld to hunt him. Figler makes a separate attempt to trap Fabian for the reward but Fabian escapes.

Helen discovers the license is a forgery and leaves Nosseross to pursue her own fortune. When she returns, she finds that Nosseross has killed himself rather than face the consequences.

Fabian takes shelter on Anna's scow on the Thames while Kristo's men close in. Mary arrives, and Fabian tries to manipulate events to claim the reward, then runs toward Hammersmith Bridge where The Strangler intercepts him.

The Strangler throws Fabian into the river; he is killed as Kristo walks away. The Strangler is arrested moments later, while Mary is comforted by her neighbour Adam Dunne.
