Neighborhood Watch

In Homewood, Alabama, Simon McNally, a paranoid schizophrenic, is released from a mental hospital after nearly a decade of treatment. He struggles to navigate through everyday life, haunted by the voice of his abusive deceased father who continuously belittles him.

One day, Simon witnesses a young woman being assaulted and forced into a van by a man whose face he cannot see clearly. Despite the voice of his father telling him he is hallucinating, Simon is compelled to intervene and rescue her.

Simon reports the assault to local police detective Glover, who finds it hard to believe his account due to Simon's history of violent episodes and mental illness. Glover checks the van's license plate, revealing it registered to a vehicle located hundreds of miles away.

Desperate for help, Simon approaches his neighbor Ed Deerman, a retired campus security guard. Ed is skeptical but eventually agrees to assist Simon in uncovering the truth behind the woman’s abduction.

At the department of motor vehicles, Ed attempts to negotiate with staff to access plate owners, but Simon becomes overwhelmed and lashes out violently when they refuse. They retreat to Ed's car, where Ed calms Simon down by clicking a pen repeatedly.

Ed and Simon question local sex workers based on Simon's description of the abducted woman's outfit. The engagement turns disastrous when their car is damaged by the workers' violent pimp, resulting in Ed doubting Simon's story.

Determined to locate the woman, Ed blackmails his college replacement into obtaining plate records from a traffic officer friend. They begin visiting car owners and ultimately trace the suspect vehicle to a salvage yard.

Upon arriving at the salvage yard, Ed and Simon discover the van they were searching for had its plates removed, indicating it was stolen. As Simon hears a scream, he believes the woman is close, but Ed insists it is just a figment of his imagination.

Later that night, Simon has a heated argument with his sister DeeDee, expressing his anger about being left alone with their father during his childhood. The emotional confrontation reveals Simon's deep-seated resentment and pain.

While at Ed's home, Simon witnesses Ed being attacked by the abductor. In a panic, Simon rushes to help, ultimately disarming the attacker and accidentally shooting him, which alerts the police and escalates their predicament.

Following the incident, Simon and Ed confront Kurt, the owner of the salvage yard. They discover a hidden safe containing passports of missing women, including the name Anya, confirming Simon's fears about her abduction.

After learning that Anya was being punished for trying to escape, Simon and Ed set out to find her, motivated by the urgency and seriousness of the situation. They call the police to report their findings about Kurt's involvement.

At the abductor's address, Simon experiences another breakdown as his father's voice taunts him about failing. Ed comforts him with the clicking pen, instilling hope as they search the premises for Anya.

While searching the abductor's house, they discover a hidden door leading to a secret room. Inside, they find Anya alive, finally giving Simon and Ed a sense of purpose and accomplishment after their relentless pursuit.

As the police arrive at the scene to rescue Anya and apprehend Ed and Simon, Glover acknowledges their efforts. In a moment of connection, Simon and Ed share a meaningful look, symbolizing Simon's growth in overcoming his struggles.
