In the film’s closing moments Jamie, who has been hiding the fact that his cancer is terminal, lets the disease run its course. When the tour ends, Anna returns to Oxford not as a visitor but as Jamie’s successor. She takes his teaching post, brings the famous Victoria sponge to win over students, and slowly builds a new life within the university walls. Though Jamie remains only a memory, his influence lingers in the way she approaches each day: she embraces the present, letting “the now” shape her future instead of the meticulously planned career at Goldman Sachs she had once pursued.

The film ends on a quiet note, showing Anna reading Sylvia Plath’s Ariel and Thoreau’s Walden—books that had framed her transformation. By the last frame, she has let go of the strict, forward‑looking roadmap that defined her early ambitions and has instead adopted a philosophy of living deliberately, savoring each fleeting moment as a tribute to the love that changed her.
