My New Sassy Girl

Gyun-woo [Cha Tae-hyun] cannot forget The Girl [Victoria Song] from My Sassy Girl (2001), who leaves him and seeks refuge as a Buddhist. He then reunites with his childhood sweetheart Sassy, a Chinese-born classmate who was often teased for her broken Korean, and the two manage to build a life together. They marry despite initial opposition from Gyun-woo’s mother [Song Ok-suk], a reminder that family opinions can weigh heavily on the path to happiness. Unbeknownst to Gyun-woo, his wife submits his job application to a telecommunications company in China, setting off a chain of events that will test their bond.

Soon he and Yong-sub [Bae Sung-woo] are recruited by the company and assigned to Team Oxford, a unit presented as specially selected by the Chairman, whose Bulldog named Oxford lends its name to the team. The arrangement proves unstable: Team Oxford is eventually disbanded, Gyun-woo’s Korean colleague is fired, and he himself is relegated to degrading tasks under Executive Director Kim [Choi Jin-ho]. Throughout this period, Gyun-woo strives to keep his wife happy while guarding the truth about his employment status, hoping to shield her from the pressures of his new role and the difficulties within the company.

The tension comes to a head at a party held at the Executive Director’s home, when Gyun-woo’s wife confronts Kim in defense of him, an act that escalates quickly and culminates with a forceful tumble into the swimming pool. This confrontation precipitates a rift: Gyun-woo loses his job, their relationship strains, and the couple is pushed toward separation, each navigating the shock in their own way. A glimmer of hope appears when a thoughtful colleague, Yuko [Mina Fujii], whom Gyun-woo befriended, reminds him of how his wife stood up for him in front of the Executive Director. Her memory stirs him to reconsider what truly matters.

After returning home to find his wife missing, Gyun-woo clings to their shared memories, and the longing to reconnect becomes a driving force. He undertakes a difficult journey through mountain trails in China, a trek that tests his endurance but ultimately leads him to a plains settlement where his wife is living with her grandfather and other villagers who herd livestock on horseback. The reunion is marked by renewed warmth and a sense of belonging as the couple rebuilds their life together and starts a family of their own.

The film closes on a note of quiet hope: the family receives a call from The Girl [Victoria Song], signaling a return to a more normal life and the promise of reconciliation and continued togetherness for Gyun-woo and his wife.
