Ticket to Paradise

• What’s After the Movie follows the story of a divorced couple, Héctor Medina as Alejandro Slug and others, who are caught in a series of humorous yet heartfelt situations during a trip to Bali with their daughter, Lily. The film explores themes of love, regret, and second chances through the perspective of David (George Clooney) and Georgia (Julia Roberts), who realize that their past mistakes are affecting their ability to support their daughter’s burgeoning relationship.

The story begins with David and Georgia, a couple who have been divorced for some time, sitting with friends and reflecting on their hurried marriage 25 years ago. They admit to each other that they perhaps ignored warning signs, leading to their mutual resentment. Despite their differences, they unite in the effort to support their daughter Lily, Kaitlyn Dever, especially as she prepares to graduate and get engaged to Gede, a charming local from Bali, played by Maxime Bouttier.

When Lily informs her parents about her sudden engagement, David and Georgia are skeptical, fearing she is rushing into marriage without fully understanding her feelings or Gede’s intentions. This prompts them to travel to Bali, ostensibly to prevent the wedding, but their plan develops into a series of personal revelations. Upon arriving, they find themselves seated next to each other on the plane, exchanging passive-aggressive comments about their failed marriage while their friends try to play peacemaker. Georgia’s younger boyfriend, Paul (Lucas Bravo), also becomes part of the trip, adding romantic complications.

Once in Bali, David and Georgia decide on a “Trojan Horse” plan to gently warn Lily about making hasty decisions. They meet with Gede’s large family and get involved in local customs and traditions, including attending a family ceremony. During these activities, both David and Georgia confront their past — David reveals to Wren (Billie Lourd), that his own failing marriage was linked to a lake house that burned down, symbolizing their lost hope. Meanwhile, Georgia struggles with her feelings for Paul, who surprisingly proposes to her but gets bitten by a snake during an outing, adding to the comedy and chaos.

The film further explores their relationship as they attempt to support Lily and Gede, with moments of playful rivalry, unexpected adventures in the ocean—where David gets bitten by a dolphin— and humorous attempts at farming seaweed. These scenes highlight the characters’ evolving relationships, especially when David and Georgia realize that their genuine connection can be rekindled amid the chaos. A heartfelt scene occurs when they watch the sunrise from a hill and reflect on their shared past and future, culminating in a tender moment of reconciliation.

Throughout their trip, the characters face misunderstandings and honest conversations about their feelings and past mistakes. Georgia finally declines Paul’s proposal, and the story culminates at Lily and Gede’s wedding, where Gede’s father insists that Gede and Lily must feel their parents’ support to proceed. David and Georgia both choose to prioritize their daughter’s happiness over their own egos, giving a touching toast to Lily’s new life.

The movie ends with a scene of optimism as David and Georgia, having let go of their grudges, support Lily wholeheartedly. They leave Bali aboard a boat, and in a spontaneous decision influenced by their renewed connection and joy, they jump into the ocean together, embracing life anew. The film beautifully captures the complexities of love, reconciliation, and the importance of family, all set against the stunning backdrop of Bali’s landscapes.
