What Happens in My Dear Desperado: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of My Dear Desperado (2010) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Han Se-jin [Jung Yu-mi] is a fresh university graduate who leaves her conservative hometown, where her father [Min Kyung-jin] is the local stationmaster, for Seoul after landing a job at an IT company. But the company soon goes bankrupt, and she is forced to scramble, moving into a cheap basement flat while she continues the job hunt. The sudden upheaval casts a wary light on the big city as she navigates a landscape that feels both promising and precarious.

Her new neighbor is the middle-aged Oh Dong-cheol [Park Joong-hoon], a small-time gangster who works for Boss Kim [Jeong Woo-hyuk] collecting loans. At first, Se-jin is tense about sharing walls with a man from the underworld, yet a careful, growing friendship develops as he quietly helps her out on a couple of occasions, softening the edge of her isolation.

Driven by a painful economic recession, Se-jin ends up sharing a drink with Dong-cheol and they have a one-night stand. The closeness sparks a complicated dynamic: she later asks him to pose as her wealthy boyfriend on a trip home to visit her anxious father, hoping the ruse will ease his worries and perhaps open doors. The plan doesn’t unfold as neatly as she hopes, and Se-jin ends up staying with her father longer than anticipated.

Meanwhile, back in Seoul, Dong-cheol’s actions have already roiled the city, as he nearly triggers a gang war by beating up some hapkido athletes in revenge. Boss Kim orders him to formally apologize to the athletes’ boss, Park [Jeong In-gi], a former police detective. Dong-cheol reluctantly agrees, but the day’s tensions collide with Se-jin’s looming important job interview in Seoul, weaving their fates together in unpredictable ways.

My Dear Desperado Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about My Dear Desperado (2010): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does Han Se-jin ask Dong-cheol to pretend to be her boyfriend?

Se-jin asks Dong-cheol to pose as her wealthy boyfriend because she wants to ease her father's anxieties about her situation in Seoul. After losing her job and moving to a basement flat, she worries about her father seeing her struggling. The ruse is meant to reassure him that she is doing well professionally and personally, though the plan ultimately backfires when the situation becomes more complicated than she anticipated.

Foreshadowing: Earlier scenes show Se-jin's tension about her father learning about her job loss and cramped living situation, establishing why she would resort to deception.

  • dong-cheol
  • fake boyfriend
  • father

  • job loss
Q2

Why does Dong-cheol agree to help Se-jin despite being a gangster?

Dong-cheol is drawn to Se-jin's fiery, outspoken nature and finds himself genuinely caring for her despite his rough exterior. Though he lacks real fighting skills and projects a tough image, he is a fundamentally decent person who quietly helps her with small favors. The one-night stand deepens their connection, making him willing to step outside his comfort zone and pose as her wealthy boyfriend, even though the role is far from his actual life.

Foreshadowing: Dong-cheol's pattern of quietly helping Se-jin from the start of their neighborly relationship foreshadows his willingness to take on this unusual request.

Q3

What causes the conflict between Dong-cheol and the hapkido athletes?

Dong-cheol beats up some hapkido athletes in revenge for an earlier incident, likely related to his loan collection work or a personal grievance. This act of violence nearly triggers a gang war because the athletes are connected to Park, a former police detective who now leads their group. Boss Kim, Dong-cheol's superior, is forced to intervene and order him to formally apologize to defuse the escalating tension.

Foreshadowing: Earlier scenes establish Dong-cheol's quick temper and tendency toward violence despite his lack of actual fighting skill, setting up this reckless action.

  • gang war

Q4

Why does Se-jin stay at her father's house instead of returning to Seoul?

Se-jin ends up staying at her father's house longer than planned because the ruse with Dong-cheol doesn't unfold as neatly as she hoped. The awkwardness of the deception and possibly her father's concerns about her situation lead her to remain in her hometown rather than leave with Dong-cheol. This unexpected stay highlights the precarious line between her deception and reality, forcing her to confront her circumstances directly.

Foreshadowing: The trip was already tense from the start, with Se-jin worried about maintaining the false image of success.

Q5

What happens to Se-jin's important job interview?

On the same day Dong-cheol is forced to deliver his formal apology in Seoul, Se-jin faces her important job interview. The summary indicates these parallel events weave their fates together in unpredictable ways, suggesting the timing creates additional tension between her professional prospects and the personal complications arising from her connection to Dong-cheol's criminal world.

Foreshadowing: Se-jin's ongoing job hunt and the pressure to find employment has been a central struggle since her company went bankrupt.

Q6

Why does Boss Kim order Dong-cheol to apologize to Park?

Boss Kim orders Dong-cheol to formally apologize because his reckless revenge against the hapkido athletes has created a dangerous situation that threatens to explode into a full gang war. As Dong-cheol's employer and the person responsible for managing relations with other criminal groups, Boss Kim needs to defuse the tension quickly. Apologizing to Park, who is a former police detective and now the athletes' boss, is the diplomatic solution to prevent further conflict.

Foreshadowing: Boss Kim's role as a loan collector who maintains business relationships with various groups establishes why he would prioritize avoiding open conflict.

Q7

Why do Se-jin and Dong-cheol end up having a one-night stand?

Se-jin and Dong-cheol share a one-night stand driven by their mutual emotional vulnerability during a period of economic hardship and personal struggle. Se-jin is depressed from her ongoing job search and feeling isolated in the big city, while Dong-cheol is also struggling in his own way. Their connection is blurred by necessity and mutual support, and the encounter sparks a complicated dynamic that deepens their relationship.

Foreshadowing: The growing friendship between them over previous weeks, combined with Se-jin's loneliness and economic desperation, sets the emotional groundwork for this moment.

Q8

Why does Se-jin move into a basement flat in Seoul?

Se-jin is forced to downsize to a cheap basement flat because the IT company she was supposed to work for goes bankrupt shortly after she arrives in Seoul. With no job, limited savings, and a tight economy, she cannot afford more expensive housing. The basement flat represents the harsh reality of economic recession and the precarious nature of urban life for young job seekers.

Foreshadowing: The summary opens by establishing the economic recession as a key force driving the story's events.

Q9

How does the trip to Se-jin's hometown affect their relationship?

The trip to Se-jin's hometown becomes a turning point that exposes the fragility of their connection across different worlds. While initially meant to ease her father's worries, the awkward ruse backfires and creates new complications. Se-jin staying behind while Dong-cheol returns to Seoul alone highlights the growing distance between them and raises questions about whether their relationship can survive their contrasting realities.

Foreshadowing: The inherent tension between Se-jin's desire for stability and Dong-cheol's criminal lifestyle was established from their first meeting.

Q10

Does Se-jin find out about Dong-cheol's real criminal life?

The summary establishes that Se-jin is initially tense about sharing walls with a man from the underworld, indicating she is aware or suspects Dong-cheol's criminal background from early on. Her wariness reflects that she knows about his work for loan collector Boss Kim, though the extent of his activities and the dangers they pose may become clearer as their relationship develops.
