Grace Beasley, a timid Chicago housewife, wins tickets to a Victor Fox concert. At nearly the same moment, her husband Max tells her he wants a divorce and complains about her singing. This clash sets up a conflict between her craving for novelty and the stability of her marriage.

Grace soon learns that her son Andrew is divorcing his wife Maudey. The news widens the sense that upheaval is spreading through the family. Grace feels the ripple effects of change reaching every corner of her life.

Grace goes to the Victor Fox concert only to find it canceled. She is later stunned to discover that Victor Fox has been murdered. The double blow compels her to seek a personal connection to the singer's fate.

Grace decides to travel to England to attend Victor Fox's funeral. In the newspaper she sees a dedication to Victor defined as unconditional love, signed 'D.S.' She then discovers another arrangement using the same phrase—Victor's valet Dirk Simpson—hinting at secrets behind the tragedy.

Dirk shares that Victor was rejected by his family for being gay and that he enjoyed dressing up in a tiara as a child. He hints at revenge and reveals his plan to go to Chicago to track down and confront the serial killer who murdered Victor. Grace remains sympathetic but cautious about getting involved.

Before the service, Grace and Dirk talk their way into the funeral home to dress Victor's body in a tiara and pink feather boa, shocking his relatives. The act signals a rebellious bond between them and signals Dirk's devotion to Victor. The scene hints at a deeper connection behind the tragedy.

Back in the United States, Maudey joins Grace and Dirk's effort to track down the Crossbow Killer, who has killed several people including Victor Fox. The trio pursues leads across Chicago as the investigation tightens. Their partnership grows, even as tensions simmer.

The trio is arrested due to a misunderstanding with the police, forcing them to explain themselves. At the station, Maudey and Andrew reconcile, and Max expresses a desire to reunite with Grace. The incident shifts the group's dynamics and personal loyalties.

Grace decides to return to Max, disappointing Dirk who has grown tired of his partner's hunger for new adventures. He reveals his longing for their old life and doubts their future together. The tension propels Grace to re-evaluate what she truly desires.

Grace reunites with Maudey and finds Dirk dressed as Victor, loudly playing his music in the parking garage where Victor Fox was murdered. The Crossbow Killer—a deranged window washer who hates singing—emerges, and they must distract him. Grace finds the courage to stand up to danger and help overpower him.

The Crossbow Killer is overpowered and the police are led to him. Weeks later, Grace and Dirk appear on a talk show, celebrated for their bravery. Dirk announces that Victor Fox's home will be turned into a sanctuary for homeless gay youth, putting pressure on Victor's relatives to comply.

Max stands up in the audience and asks Grace to sing for everyone, signaling a change in their relationship. Barry Manilow takes the stage and sings a duet with Grace, providing a hopeful, celebratory ending to their journey. The community embraces the idea of sanctuary and renewal.
