Stan Butler, a bus driver for the Town & District company, earns a reputation for chaotic mishaps on the road. His partner in mischief is Jack Harper, and their ever-watchful supervisor, the stern Inspector Blakey, keeps a close eye on every blunder. What begins as a string of near-disasters at the garage forecourt soon spirals into a full day of accidents: one incident leaves Blakey injured after a wardrobe mishap distracts Stan, another blunder has Jack reversing into the depot manager’s car and trapping him beneath the bonnet, and a final crash wrecks two buses when a third vehicle collides with Stan’s ride. The result is swift and unequivocal: Stan, Blakey, and Jack are all dismissed from their posts, and the men must face a long stretch of unemployment and uncertainty.

With work hard to come by, Jack spots a newspaper ad for a bus crew and persuades Stan to apply together. The opportunity looks promising when they secure positions at a Pontins holiday camp in Prestatyn, North Wales, operating the camp’s tour bus. To their surprise, the camp also hires Blakey—whose foot is still healing—as its new security inspector, which adds a fresh layer of tension to their holiday job. The situation is further complicated when Stan decides to bring his family along on staff discount, hoping for a relaxing break, while his tight-fisted brother-in-law, Arthur Arthur Rudge, balks at paying train fare and instead relies on his motorcycle and sidecar to transport the group. The Butler party includes Stan’s Mum, his wife, his sister Olive, and Olive’s young son, Little Arthur, and their journey to the camp is marred by a mishap that leaves most of their luggage drenched and a case ruined by mud.

Once at the camp, life buzzes with the usual comic chaos. Blakey keeps a wary eye on Stan and Jack as they slip back into their old habits, all while he serenely teaches an old-time dancing class to camp guests and spends quiet moments with the camp’s nurse, Joan. The family’s arrival brings new warmth to the holiday, as Mum befriends Bert Bert Thompson, an Irish widower who is enjoying his own respite at the camp. Stan, meanwhile, pursues romance on the job, attempting to charm Mavis Mavis Hudson, one of the camp guests, though her mother proves to be a formidable obstacle with a keen eye for Stan’s flirting.

On the tour bus, Stan’s attentions are drawn to a staff canteen worker named Maria Maria, but her protective brother Luigi Luigi watches over her and proves to be a formidable gatekeeper. The tension peaks when Luigi confronts Stan after evidence surfaces of a supposed liaison in the manager’s chalet, leading to a tense confrontation that Blakey barely glosses over as gossip. The truth comes under closer scrutiny when the manager confirms that no romance occurred, but Blakey’s suspicions linger, complicating Stan’s interactions with the camp staff and guests.

In the ensuing days, Stan’s mistakes feverishly unfold in a new environment. Jack pursues a flirtation with Sandra Sandra while also juggling duties on the tour bus, and Olive finds herself drawn into further misadventure. An unfortunate accident sends Olive into trouble, and a mistaken misstep leads to a broken misunderstanding that only intensifies the need for repairs and redecorations around the staff quarters. To keep the inspector entertained and to buy time, the pair even conspires to repaint a chalet, only to discover more trouble when a bottle of petrol from Arthur’s motorcycle ends up in the toilet and explodes when a cigarette is discarded. The chaos continues as the camp must replace a toilet and redecorate again, with Olive accidentally wandering into the wrong chalet and into someone else’s bed in the confusion.

Amid the revolving door of accidents and repairs, Stan makes another attempt to win over Maria, while Luigi looks on with protective pride. The moment of truth arrives when Blakey jumps to conclusions about Stan’s supposed romance, only to face the manager’s denial and Luigi’s insistence that the inspector is mistaken. Yet the tension remains high as Jack visits the camp nurse for a private moment, leaving behind Blakey’s jacket and provoking a chase that ends with the manager firing Blakey for mixing romance with work rules.

The holiday winds down, and the Butler family heads home with a sense of relief mixed with one last minor setback—the luggage from the river claim. Meanwhile, Stan and Jack, relieved that Blakey is out of the way, set their sights on fresh adventures with two new female guests and borrow the camp bus for a night excursion to the beach. Their absence from duty ends badly when the bus sinks into wet sand and becomes immovable, forcing them to wait for the tide to recede. By the time they attempt a second move, the tide has risen and submerged the vehicle, sealing their fate with a final sacking.

Back at the labour exchange, Blakey now works as a clerk, a twist that comes with a sense of irony for the two men who once called him their nemesis. The story closes on a note of rolling fate: Stan ends up as the driver of a wrecking ball for a demolition company, a punishingly apt job that mirrors the earlier mayhem and ending on a comically suited, if bittersweet, final image. The film delivers its signature blend of pratfalls, quick-witted banter, and a steady rhythm of misadventure, while easing each character through a sequence of trials that test loyalty, luck, and the ever-present urge to push the edge of caution.
