Three amateur thieves hatch a plan to kidnap the young son of a wealthy man, known to Tamil audiences as Chettiar and to Hindi audiences as Kishore Mehta, from a school, testing their setup with a trial run. Things take a sharp turn when, on the eve of the kidnapping, Raju, the crane operator who is essential to the scheme, is suddenly hospitalized, leaving the crew short-handed and desperate.
Enter Avinasi, also known as Avinash in Hindi and nicknamed Mumbai Xpress, a deaf but remarkably calm stuntman renowned for his fearless bike acts. He is hired to take over the dangerous job. As the plan unfolds, the other two gang members are sidelined through a sequence of mishaps and injuries, and the usually reliable duo finds themselves outmaneuvered by the realities of their plan, leaving Avinasi to carry the task largely on his own.
Yet the operation veers off course in a dramatic way: Avinasi ends up kidnapping the wrong boy, Daddu, who is the illegitimate son of Ahalya and police officer Rao. Despite this misstep, Avinasi somehow secures a substantial ransom from Chettiar/Mehta by pure happenstance, turning the kidnapping into a lucrative, if chaotic, affair.
Tensions flare as the original kidnap plotting trio — Chidambaram (Tamil) / Digambar (Hindi) and Johnson — clash over how to handle Ahalya’s child, while Avinasi delivers the child safely back to his mother, avoiding further harm and earning a complicated new kind of trust. Through overheard conversations between Ahalya and Rao, the emotional and financial stakes become clear: Rao wants to close the ransom deal and sever ties, while Ahalya pleads for a lifeline to keep her family intact.
The child’s affection for Avinasi grows, and the young one begins to see him as a protective figure, prompting Avinasi to reconsider what he wants from life. The mother’s dilemma deepens as she contemplates split loyalties between Rao’s money and Chettiar’s wealth, all while Avinasi is drawn deeper into their world and its tangled loyalties. Amid these personal entanglements, Rao formally designates Chettiar to handle the ransom, triggering a fresh round of comic miscommunications and misunderstandings that push the story toward a final reckoning.
In the end, old resentments are resolved, new alliances are formed, and the players come together to redefine their futures. Avinasi and Ahalya, now a couple, steer a new venture—Mumbai Express—a mega-bar that anchors their partnership and secures a hopeful, celebratory ending for everyone involved.
