What Is Mulberry Street About? (No Spoilers)

The plot of Mulberry Street (2006) without spoilers: what it is about, who it follows and where it takes place, told without the twists or the ending. Enough to decide whether it is your next watch, not enough to ruin it.

Sweltering heat bears down on Mulberry Street, baking the concrete of downtown Manhattan and fraying the nerves of its residents. In this neighborhood, where urban decay meets the struggle of daily life, a sudden and violent shift is underway. A lethal infection begins to spread with terrifying speed, born from the pollution and vermin lurking beneath the city streets. As the situation escalates, the familiar landscape of the city transforms into a hunting ground, forcing the locals to confront a threat that defies explanation.

The source of the horror is a plague spread by sewer rats, turning humans into ravenous, rat-like monstrosities. The infection is swift and merciless, stripping away humanity and leaving behind a primal urge to destroy. While news reports struggle to explain the chaos and authorities attempt to maintain a veneer of control, the streets descend into anarchy. The true terror, however, is found in the intimacy of the threat; the monsters are not strangers, but former friends and neighbors, now unrecognizable and driven by a singular, bloodthirsty purpose.

Caught in the center of this maelstrom is Clutch, a retired boxer waiting for his daughter, Casey, to return from her tour of duty in Iraq. His anticipation turns to dread as the neighborhood he calls home is overrun, forcing him to rally a small group of tenants in a desperate bid for survival. Alongside five others facing eviction, Clutch must navigate the claustrophobic hallways of his apartment building, turning the only home he has left into a fortress against the encroaching darkness.

With the city cut off and emergency services overwhelmed, the group’s focus narrows to the immediate reality of staying alive until dawn. The film captures the raw tension of a community under siege, balancing the physical horror of the creatures with the psychological weight of isolation. As the night wears on, the question of whether help will arrive hangs heavy in the air, leaving the survivors to wonder if the world outside their barricaded doors is already lost.
