In the chaotic whirlwind of her life as a temp, dog walker, yoga instructor, and aspiring fashion designer, Charlie Cantilini finds herself swept off her feet by the charming Dr. Kevin Fields. Initially, she is led to believe Kevin is gay due to a misleading comment from his ex-girlfriend, Fiona, which adds a layer of confusion to their blossoming romance. However, as Kevin proves his genuine affection for Charlie, a deeper bond begins to form.
Things take a dramatic turn with the arrival of Kevin’s mother, Viola, a former newscaster now turned talk show host who is grappling with her recent career setback. Her jealousy of Charlie stems from her own insecurities and the fear of being displaced, having recently been replaced by a younger counterpart on television. Viola’s immediate prejudice against Charlie is apparent, as she views her only as a temporary figure in her son’s life, just as she believes her own life and career have become irrelevant.
As Kevin unexpectedly proposes to Charlie, Viola’s jealousy turns to a ruthless scheme to disrupt their future together. Underestimating Charlie, she enlists the help of her devoted assistant Ruby and Fiona, leading to disastrous consequences at Kevin’s engagement party where Fiona kisses him, leaving Charlie feeling utterly betrayed and isolated.
Viola’s malevolent plans grow as she pretends to have an anxiety attack, moving in with Charlie in a feeble attempt to drive her insane. However, Charlie quickly catches on to Viola’s tactics and retaliates by sabotaging Viola’s personal space. The tension boils over, resulting in a fierce confrontation that ultimately forces Viola to leave the apartment.
Undeterred, Viola escalates her actions, even attempting to provoke a severe allergy reaction in Charlie during a rehearsal dinner, which further emphasizes her severe disregard for Charlie’s well-being. The wedding day looms with an air of uncertainty as Viola’s behavior becomes increasingly erratic, culminating in a dramatic confrontation at the altar when Kevin’s grandmother, Gertrude, enters the scene. Gertrude’s long-standing resentment towards Viola adds fuel to the fire, blaming her for the heart-wrenching loss of her son, Kevin’s father.
Realizing the toxic behaviors that could spiral out of control in her own relationship, Charlie ultimately comes to the difficult decision to call off the wedding. Just as fate intervenes, allowing Ruby to converse with Viola, an unexpected moment of reflection occurs. Viola’s comparison to Gertrude highlights her often missed emotional needs, leading to an epiphany where she recognizes the importance of her son’s happiness over her grudges.
In a moment of genuine self-growth, Viola declares her intention to respect Charlie and Kevin’s relationship, fostering a supportive environment rather than a hostile one. Charlie reciprocates this sentiment, ensuring Viola’s place in their lives.
As the wedding vows are finally exchanged between Charlie and Kevin, joy fills the air in a celebration of love and understanding. The bouquet toss leads to a surprising moment when Viola, now embodying warmth and acceptance in her peach dress, catches the bouquet—a beautiful symbol that even the most challenging relationships can evolve and thrive through empathy and compassion.
As the newlyweds embark on their Hawaiian adventure, Viola and Ruby set off for a night of celebration, marking a new chapter filled with hope and camaraderie.
