DJ Walters, a curious 12-year-old boy, spends his days closely observing his elderly neighbor, Mr. Nebbercracker. Known for his fierce demeanor, Nebbercracker is infamous for confiscating any belongings that stray into his yard, establishing an aura of fear around his eerie home.

Despite DJ's growing suspicions regarding Nebbercracker's house, his concerns go unacknowledged by his parents. Left in the care of his uninterested babysitter, Zee, DJ feels increasingly isolated and determined to uncover the truth.

On a seemingly normal day, DJ's best friend, Chowder, visits him. Their day takes a turn when Chowder accidentally loses his prized basketball on Mr. Nebbercracker's property, prompting a daring decision to retrieve it.

DJ and Chowder sneak onto Nebbercracker's property to recover the lost basketball. They are caught by Nebbercracker, who, in a fit of anger, appears to suffer a heart attack before being rushed away by an ambulance.

That night, DJ starts receiving bizarre and ominous phone calls from Nebbercracker's house, filled with eerie silence. This only heightens DJ's concerns as he witnesses strange happenings emerging from within the eerie domicile.

Zee's boyfriend, Bones, shares a chilling account about Nebbercracker devouring his wife after losing a kite. After a confrontation with Zee, he recklessly ventures onto Nebbercracker's lawn, leading to a horrific and fatal encounter with the animated house.

DJ informs Chowder of the unfolding horror, but Chowder is doubtful. To prove his point, Chowder ventures into Nebbercracker's property but barely escapes when the house attempts to capture him after he rings the doorbell.

As Halloween draws near, DJ, Chowder, and their friend Jenny band together to confront the haunted house's mysteries. They uncover that the house is a Domus Mactabilis, predicated on consuming souls, with its heart residing in the fireplace.

Despite the trio's attempts to warn the local police about the malevolent house, they are met with skepticism. Their plan to use a decoy filled with cold medicine backfires, resulting in their unexpected arrest, followed by the horrifying consumption of the officers by the house.

Inside the house, DJ, Chowder, and Jenny unveil a terrifying truth: a collection of lost toys and the embalmed body of Mr. Nebbercracker's wife, Constance. This revelation leads them to realize that her tormented spirit is what animates the house.

The tense atmosphere escalates when Nebbercracker returns, revealing his poignant past with Constance, who died after being mocked by children. Torn by grief, he had tried to scare kids away, believing he was protecting them from hurt.

In an epic confrontation, DJ encourages Nebbercracker to let Constance's spirit go free. As chaos intensifies, Chowder distracts the house while DJ and Jenny execute a daring plan to destroy it using dynamite.

With the house in ruins, the spirit of Constance is finally liberated, paving the way for DJ and his friends to mend the emotional scars left by the haunting. Nebbercracker is finally given closure, allowing him to heal.

Later that evening, DJ, Chowder, and Jenny enjoy a joyous Halloween filled with laughter, joining Nebbercracker to return the lost toys to their rightful owners. This act of kindness marks a significant shift in Nebbercracker's character and offers redemption.

As the trio sets out for trick-or-treating, they witness the release of the once-captive souls from the house, bringing a close to a terrifying chapter. This moment symbolizes hope and a new beginning for everyone involved.
