Dr. Quent Brady and Dan Morgan are in charge of a bold, high-stakes program that tests survival by sending various animals and insects into space as precursors to a crewed mission. When a rocket carrying wasps malfunctions and veers off course, a computer projection suggests it will likely crash off the coast of Africa. This sets the stage for a dangerous, globe-spanning investigation that blends scientific curiosity with the primal unknown of the jungle.

In a remote corner of Africa, Dr. Lorentz and his daughter Lorna Lorentz perform an autopsy on a native who died from paralysis in the nerve centers, caused by a massive venom injection. Their work hints at something far more terrifying than ordinary predators. Arobi, Lorentz’s African assistant, brings troubling news: a monster is said to stalk the countryside in a place known as Green Hell.

Months pass as Brady reads about growing unrest in Central Africa, where gigantic monsters are allegedly terrorizing people and wildlife. He theorizes that the wasps from their missing rocket were exposed to cosmic radiation—an idea sparked by an earlier, minor overexposure that had already produced a spider crab twice the size of its mother. With escalating curiosity and a sense of urgency, Brady and Morgan seek leave from Washington to pursue answers in person.

Their journey begins in Libreville, where a territorial agent lines up the trek to Lorentz’s hospital. Mahri, an Arab guide, leads Brady, Morgan, and their small party on a grueling four-hundred-mile safari through brush fires, fever, drought, and storms. When they finally reach the Lorentz compound, Lorna reveals that her father did not return from a mission to Green Hell. The tension deepens as Arobi arrives with word that Lorentz has been killed by a monster dwelling in a volcanic cauldron, and he presents Brady with a giant wasp stinger he removed from the doctor’s shoulder. After examining the stinger, Brady confirms it belongs to a giant, deadly wasp. He urges Lorna to stay at the hospital, but she insists on joining Brady, Morgan, Mahri, and Arobi on the expedition to Green Hell.

The native bearers desert the group, and though Lorna manages to shame several local villagers into helping, fear drives many away when they reach a desolate village littered with the dead. Brady voices a chilling concern: the insects may be multiplying, and the team’s mission must pivot toward destruction of the queen and her immediate colony. He reveals small grenade-like bombs—filled with a special explosive—that could wipe out the nest. As they ascend toward the volcano’s base, a thunderous buzz grows louder.

From a ridge above Green Hell, Brady spies the queen wasp and many gigantic workers guarding the hive. The team launches grenades into the volcanic bowl, but the explosions only provoke the swarm. A wasp the size of a building gives chase, forcing them to flee into a cave that it cannot enter. They escape through another opening just as the volcano erupts, spewing lava and wiping out the entire wasp colony. Morgan sums up the encounter with a stark observation: nature has a way of destroying its mistakes.
